Europsarf borer activities during June are being closely watched by growers and Purdue ' University entomologists with the possible, need for dusting and spraying as one means of control. Sevtral growers of early sweet corn or hybrid seed corn have contracted for the dusting of their fields by plane this year for the first time. As the effectiveness of dusting depends upon its being done at . exactly the right time, the planes will be able! to dust large acreages in a few hours. These tests will .L be checied. by i the 'hybrid growers and entOTncTSgists to determine if airplane dusting is as effective and practical as ground " treatment. Knowing whether the borer poulation has reached a danger point is one of the key problems, says George Gould, Purdue entomologist, The first treatment should be applied about five days after an inspection of 100 plants reveals 20 or more egg masses on the under side of the leaves. However, the weather has an effect on the ' possible population. . The very cool nights of early June ha"ve not been Long hland CVy. N. Y,

And Stop Dosing Your Stomach With Soda and Alkalizers Don't expgct to get resJ relief from headache, sour stomach, gaa and bad breath by taking soda and other alkalizers if the true cause of your trouble ia constipation. In this case, your real trouble is not in the stomach at all. But in the intestinal tractwhere80 of your food is digested. And when it gets blocked it fails to direst properly. What you want for real relief is not soda or an alkalizer but something to "unblock" your intestinal tract. Something to clean it out effectively help Nature get back on her feet. Get Carter's Pills right now. Taka them as directed. They gently and effectively "unblock" your digestive tract. This permits your food to move along normally. Nature's own digestivejuices can then reach it. You get genuine relief that makes you feel really good again. Cet Carter's Pills at any drugstore 'lot. "Unblock" your intestinal tract for real relief from indigestion. i favorable for egg laying and the j hatching of egg?. If the weather j becomes seasonably warm the peak of egg production will be reached in a few days. When- dusting or spraying is imperative and justifies the ex1 pense, Gould makes the following recommendations on the basis of the 1945 preliminary tests which used the insecticides, Gube, Ryania and DDT in sprays from the ground on sweet corn on muck soils. , Although the DDT plots showed the , greatest reduction in borers, the yield increase was I not as large as the other two j treatments. No apparent injury j could be detected from any treatment. The cost of spraying with a 12-row sprayer ranged from about $4.00 an acre for four applications of DDT to $9.00 an acre for Cube and Hyania. POULTRY RFCORDS , SHOW HIGH INCOME LAFAYETTE, ' Ind. Good . management of the poultry flock paid dividends for 1945 as revealed by the recently published summary of lndiana co-operators' poultry flock records. : Attention is called by J. W. Sicer, Purdue University exten- ' sion poultryman, to the average laying flock income per hen, vhich was $2.79 for the all time high of 1942-43.. Light' . breeds showed 'a," labor, income, per' hen of '$2.81 as " compared " 'With v$2.23 tor neavy oreeas. While even the labor income from the low ' third exceeded $1.00, Sicer cautioned that the narrowing margin in the years ahead may catch. this group in a squeeze if management, is not improved. A new hieh for the average egg production per hen of 174.3 eggs was reached. This figure is on the basis of the total of the monthly average number of eggs per bird and showed an' increase of 4.6 eggs above the 1944 record. Commenting upon this' increase, the poultryman said that part of the credit can be given Lawn Mower Sharpening and Repairing We grind 'em by the proven, most efficient way. GERALD P. NYE, one of the Senate's leading pre-Pearl Harbor Isolationists, seeks to regain the seat he held for nearly 20 years in North Dakota's election, Tuesday, June 25. (International) to. gradual improvement in breeding, part to! better feeding and considerable credit should be given to the increased use of 100 percent pullet flocks. The report shows a steady trend towards all pullat flocks, with last year, 87 percent of all females on hand at the start of the record year were pullets, as compared to 64.3 percent pullets in 1944. There has been an average of about 63 percent all pullet flocks over the past 20 years. , Copies of the summary may be seen in the county agricultural agent's office or obtained from Purdue University. Successful dairymen have found that rotating the cattle on pastures pays, the Purdue University dairy department adviser. Cows profit from a change of fields. The herd is changed every ten to fourteen days. Hoosier farmers have gone in for soil conservation districts in a big way this year, according to R. O. Cole, Purdue University soil conservationist and executive secretary of the state soil conservation committee. New districts were formed in 13 counties, in the - past eighteen months, totalling 2,971,055 acres on ' 18,855 farms. Additional trcritory added to seven other counties totaled 1,099,623. The total acreage included in soil conservation districts in the state now totals 6,965,074 acres. Records of brucellosis testing in 1945 showed that the prevalence of this cattle disease increased again last year and has gone up 100 percent in the past five years, according to' Purdue University department of Veterinary Science. These authorities point out that all too frequently owners have come to look upon vaccination as a brucellosis "cure-all".' They say , that there is nothing wrong with vaccination wisely employed but that it cannot . replace periodic blood testing as the sound basis for brucellosis control. Each of the stem-rust-control measures for barberry eradication and the use, of , resistant varieties of grain when put into practice, help to stabilize grain yeilds and maintain grain qualityafter the major costs of production have been incurred, declares Stanley Castell of the U, S.
