P' II 'SUNDAY, Uniform . II '-' M International SCHOOL k-LESSON : Lesson for April 28 i ! Lesson subjects and Scripture .texts selected and copyrighted by International Council of Religious Education used by permlssios. !-t i i DECISIVE MOMENTS IN PETER S LIFE I LESSON TEXT John 1:42; Mark 8: 37-29; Luke 22:54-57, -61, 62; John 21: 15-17. MEMORY SELECTION We ought to obey Cod father than men. Acts 5:2S. ( Men are of primary intent to God. Our Lord Jesus has always been concerned about men, ager that they should be filled with- all the fullness of His love and the beauty of His grace. He it is who stands by in the hour of weakness and failure to give renewed strength to His repentant child. ; The life of Peter runs the gamut Of, human feelings from the height of joy and assurance to the depth of despair. He learned many of his lessons the hard way by a stubborn struggle in the school of experience but he c.me out into a glorious and triumphant faith in Christ. 1. A New Name and a Great Confession (John 1:42; Mark 8:27-29). When a man comes to Jesus in true faith and devotion he becomes a changed man. The Bible speaks of it as a Eew "birth, a radical change from darkness to light, a going from death to life. A name is important in its bearing on the . individual's life. How often parents hinder or embarrass a child with an unworthy name, or a foolish imitation of the name of some giddy individual in the public eye, but lacking real character. . Simon, which means "bearing" was completed by the name Peter -meaning "rocit," a token oi tms change of directioA of life. The Lord gave it to him, and He knew all about the man, his past, pr.cnt and future, the longings of his hprt which were to be fulfilled in sjvica for Him. The great confession of O'rrst . (Mark 8), which becamjfe the fun dation of the church (see Matt. 16: 18), was the expression of the heart cf this spiritually changed man. He knew what the Lord had done for him, and knew that ft was the work of God, not the influence of some philosophy of man, nor the result of following a great teacher or an example. "Thou art the Christ!" Such if, the conviction and confession of fce man or woman with the reborn liflj II. An Awful Failure and a Deep Repentance (Luke1 22?54-57, 61, 62). Peter had vaunted himself In declaring his everlasting loyalty io the Lord. His old self-satisfaction and boastfulness had overcome him. He had even come to the place where he felt capable of telling the Lord that He was mistaken. . He made the grave mistake of following the Lord "afar oil" (v. 54). ,He did not intend to deny the Lord, but he had allowed himself to get into a position where it was hard to stand up for Him. , , The lesson for us is evident." It ,we want Our faith to be steady and true in the hour of the enemy's attack we must not get far from the Lord, nor may we find our fellowship with tliis Christ-denying world. Potot'e efrnr rfani;,! rt mi Lord, his use of language unbecoming to a believer, his quick falsehoodsall these mark the thing he did for what he knew it to be when he heard the cock crow a terrible sin against the Christ. The look of Jesus doubtless carried conviction, but one somehow feels that it was even more a look of tenderness and of assurance of the Lord's promised prayers for him. The thins which brousht the tears of repentance, was . the remembrance of the Lord's own words (v. 61). It is the recollection of the Word of God which brings a man to his senses spiritually. ' Peter's repentance was real. -So we una mat jr-eier was restored ana reinstated in his place of service for me juora. . III. A Complete Restoration and an Obedient Service (John 21:15-17). Jesus mt Peter on the first Easter morning, so he was assured of forgiveness. But Peter and the others had returned to their old life as fishermen. They seem to have lost their vision, or had become discouraged. ' But the Lord had not forgotten them. He appeared and told them where to catch fish, and then we have the lovely scene around the fire as they breakfasted together. There it was that the Lord met Peter, and as he had denied Christ thrice he is asked to thrice declare his devotion to Him. ' The man who thus declared his readiness to serve Christ to the end had many an opportunity to prove the sincerity of that profession. He met persecution and imprisonment, but to every effort of man to close his mouth or to change his witness he had the simple reply of absolute obedience to the Lord. . Tradition tells us that this faithfulness finally led Peter to a martyr's death. So we see a life made over, made powerful, made glorious for God through the matchless grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. A THE CHURCHES
, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE ' SERVICES i "Probation after Death" i& the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches' of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, April 28. The Golden Text is: "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin" (Hebrews 3:12, 13). Among the citations which comprise theLesson-Sermon is the followingfrom the Bible: "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; .fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old mart with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him'' (ColosBians 3:5, 9, 10). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook,"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Mortals need not fancy that belief in the experience of death will awaken them to glorified being" (p. 231). "The old man with, his deeds must be put off. Nothing sensual or sinful is immortal. The death of a false material sense and of sin, not the death of organic matter, is what reveals man and Life, harmonious, real, and eternal" (p. 296) . ST. THE UNSEEN TEMPLE A builder builded a temple He wrought it with grace and skillPillars and groins and arches All. fashioned to work His' will, And men said as they saw His beauty, It never shall know decay; Great is thy skill, O Builder! Thy fame shall endure for aye.
A teacher builded a temple With loving arid, infinite care, Planning eacljarch with patience, Laing each stone with prayer. None praised the unceasing efforts,. None knew of the wondrous plan, For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eye of man.
Gone is the builder's temple Crumbled into dust; Lost lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust. But the temple the teacher builded Will last while' the ages roll; For the beautiful unseen temple Was a child's immortal soul.

Three men, all engaged at the same employment, were asked what they were doing. One said he was making five dollars a day. Another replied that he was cutting stone. A third said he was building a cathedral. The difference was not in what they were actually doing, although the spirit cf the third might quite possibly have made him the more expert at his task. They were all earning the same wage; they were all cutting stone; but only one held it in his mind that he was helping build a great edifice. Life meant more to the cathedral builder than to his mates, because he saw further ?nd more clearly. The farmer may be only planting seed, but if he opens his eyes hev is 4 feeding the world. :' - 1 v v ' , The railroad man, the factory hand, the clerk in the store, likewise are building their cathedrals. The investors in stocks and bonds, the executives of great corporations they are building cathedrals likewise, if only they can catch the vision. ' The housewife does not count the dullars she receives for her exertions, If she did, her life would be unhappy indeed. The rest cf us, the great figures cf the industrial world more th'an the humble ones, are thinking too much abaut such things as cutting stone and making profits, to realize fully the beauty of life.
