RETURNS TO WARTIME MEAT CONTROL The government went ,back to wartime controls on meat effective next week in an effort to spread supplies more evenly and curb the black market. The Department of Agriculture and the OPA reinstate quotas for the slaughter of livestock, dropped last fall.

VOGLER TO LEAD STATE IN FOOD DRIVE Two Hoosier food production experts were selected tentatively in Washington to head Indiana's part in the nation-wide campaign to supply food to the millions starving in the wake of the war. L. Marshall Vogler, state director of production and marketing administration of the United States Department of Agriculture, was selected as state director. His assistant will be Perry S. Richey, who is also assistant to Mr. Vogler in the PMA.

U. S. ASKS SPAIN VIGIL The Unifed States urged the United Nations Security Council to keep a constant watch on Franco Spain from now on through a continuing investigation committee. But Russia, dissatisfied with mere investigation, retorted with a demand for real action against the Franco regime, even at the cost of a new Spanish civil war.

MORE DRASTIC SLICE IN BREAD SUPPLY LOOMS A new and drastic cut in bread for the family table or in essential wheat reserves appeared to offer the only means of fulfilling United States promises of grain to hungry foreign areas. This prospect was raised by a gloomy Agriculture Department report that stocks of wheat in this country on April 1 amounted to only 338,644,000 bushels 60 per cent of those on hand a year earlier. This would be at least 17,000,000 bushels and possibly as much as 46.000,000 or more bushels under the estinnted amount needed before the new harvest comes in.

RUSS TURN ASIDE MANCHURIA QUIZ The State Department received from Moscow a statement of Russian policy on Manchurian industry which American officials regard as unsatisfactory, it was reported on'excellent authority last night. The note came in response to an American message to the Russian Foreign Ministry early .last month which asked the Russians what was going on in Manchuria, advised them what the' Chinese said about it and in effect protested the Russian actions and policies. The reply was regarded as a rejection.

DECLARE PRESS VILIFIES LEWIS Deferring immediate action on new contract demands, the tri-district convention of the United Mine Workers as Hazelton, Pa., attacked the American press for "vilification of John L. Lewis." The press criticism resolution was adopted following a report by the resolutions committee..

BRITISH SOLDIERS SLAIN IN CLASH Six British soldiers and police were killed and 13 Britons and Jews were wounded, private sources said, when an armed group attacked a camp of British royal engineers and a car parking area in the southern part of Tel Aviv. No official report was issued immediately. The attacking group was believed to be composed of Jews, the informants said.
