The 23-carat diamond was hacked from its gold-rimmed platinum base in the floor directly beneath the rotunda by a person or persons using a hammer and chisel. The thieves apparently had some difficulty. Blood spots led from, &: gold,-encrusted star marking the diamond's location under a four-inch-thick crystal, to a smashed window pane at the rear of the building.
