acreage allotments

WILL BE REDUCED Individual farm acreage allotments of Burley tobacco in Sullivan County for 1946 will be reduced by 10 percent below 1945 in accordance with a recent announcement by the U. S. Department of Agriculture of a decrease of a similar amount in the 1943 national marketing quota, it was stated today by Clair E. Merrill, Chairman of the County AAA Committee.. This reduction, he said, was made possible through a recent amendment to the Agricultural Act of 1938, and is considered advisable at this time in order to bring supplies of Burley tobacco more nearly in line with demand. "During the past two years, we have seen available eupplies of Burley tobacco increased by approximately 200,000,000 pounds because of the record crops of 1944 and 1945", he declared. "Many Burley producers have experienced sharp drops in the prices of some grades of the 1945 crop and have expressed their favor of a reduction to prevent accumulation of a tremendous surplus of Burley, such as we saw several years ago." The 1946 total acreage allotment for Sullivan County, he said, will be about 11.0 acres, compared with 10.3 acres alloted in 1945. Mr. Merrill alfo announced that the new legislation increases the rate of penalty imposed on tobacco marketed in excess of the farm's marketing quota to 40 percent of the national average salss price during the preceding marketing year. On the basis of a season's average price . of 40 cents, the penalty rate in 1945 would be 16 cents per pound, instead of the 10-cent penr.lty in effect in the past. ! In addition to the increase :n penalty rate, Mr. Merrill naid, enforcement of the quota progrom will be further strengthened by measurement of Burley acreage on all farms in 1D46.
