Improved Vnijorm International SUNDAY SCHOOL w- LESSON ! Lesson for March 3 Lesson subjects and Scripture texts selected and copyrighted by International Council of Religious Education; used by permission. A PEOPLE FINDING A HOMELAND A LESSON TEXT: Joshua 1:1-4; 23:1-11. MEMORY SELECTION: Tliou Shalt ; bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. Deuteronomy 8:10. God is the Lord of nations as well as of homes, and he is concerned that those who .honor him in their homes have opportunity to serve Mm in their national life. This was true in a special way with Israel, but it is also true of us today. Heady to enter the Promised Land, the people had to part with their great leader, Moses, who was not permiUed to enter. The time comes when even the mightiest of men fall, but life must go on and new leadership must be found. L ine Changed Leader (Josh. 1: 1-4). 1. Workers Die God's Work Goes On (vv. 1, 2). God buries his workmen at the end of their day of labor, but God's work goes on. The people had become attached to Moses and had learned to trust his leadership, even though they often murmured. With his death we might have assumed that there would be a letdown, but that was not in God's plan. The Lord works through men; He gives them abilities and uses them for his glory, often in a way which astonishes them and others. But let them not become proud, for God has someone to take their place when they are gone. They are not indispensable; 2. The Need Is the Same, So Is the Blessing (vv. 3, 4). The promise given to Moses was still good. God's promises are always good. They are the only really stable thing in a trembling universe. - The question is, Are we ready to ' take him at his word? They were to step out by faith. The land was promised to them only as the sole of their foot should tread upon it.. Israel never took out the full promise of verse 4. They lacked faith. r God honors those who believe htm and who move forward by faith to plant the foot of spiritual conquest in new territory. Some are doino It now. Are we? "ine enemies oi uocrs people were many and mighty, but they were not sble to stand in the way of God's people when they were moving for ycuio wueu ujey were moving ior- ' ward for him.-'Hp failed. They did not drive them out, I because they did not take God at ms word. Tiie application of that truth to us is obvious. II. The Unchanging God (Josh. 23: Ml). Between our first scripture and this selection will be found the history of the conquest of the land (at least, of the larger part of it), and the division of the territory between the tribes. Years . have passed Quickly, and the new leader. Joshua, is now an old man, soon to go to his reward, j He gathers the elders, who repre-i sentea me people ana gave them i good counsel for the days ahead. even as he recalls the blessings of the past. 1. God Did Help (vv. 1-3). Israel had been in many hard battles. They had gone through the trials of pioneer days in a new and unfamiliar land. Now they were established and at peace. Perhaps they were recalling their mighty exploits and their own sacrificial efforts. Joshua reminds them that it was God who fought for them (v 3i. We need just such a reminder in our land today. 2. God Will Help (vv. 4, 5). Joshua had a word of encouragement for the days ahead. There was much yet to be done. The land had not been fully taken. "He reminded them of God's help in the past, so tha they would depend on it in the fu ture. It is one mark of a great man thai he looks beyond the end of his own short existence and plans for the future. What about the future? Joshua reminded them that every blessing they had received, every victory they had won. everything had come from the hand of God. There and there alone was their hope for the future. And it was enough! 3. Help Yourself (w, 6-11). To keep true in the land where their neighbors engaged in idol worship and all manner ot. immorality required definite action on the part of Israel. ... They were not to deviate in the slightest from God's wpy, "to the right hand or to the left" "(v. 6), for a little beginning in the wrong direction , winds up in awful departure from him. They were not even to swear by the heathen gods, not even to mention them. Thy were to "cleave" to the Lord, a graphic presentation of the close relation! between God and his people. ( There are 'many thoughts here which can be profitably applied to our daily lives. Faith in God calls for stalwart action and separated living for- him. . v

SULLIVAN DAILY. TIMES

Dr. Langdale, of New York, tells of a devoted Christian business man who was struck by an automobile and hurried to the hospital. He was informed that he had only about two hours in which to live. His faith was implicit in the goodness of God and in the future life. To him death was only a gateway leading to a higher world. He had his family called and thus addressed them : "Wife, you have been to me the greatest woman in the world. Through sunshine and shadow we have walked together- You have been my inspiration in everything I have undertaken. Especially has this been true in reference to my religious life. Many times I have see. the Spirit of God shining in your face. I love you far more than I did the day you became my bride. Good-night, dear. I'll see you in the morning. Good-night." "Mary, you are our first-born. What a joy you have been to your father. How glad I am that you have looked so much like your mother. In face and spirit you have always reminded mo of her. I see in you the sweet, beautiful young woman who left her home to become the builder of mine- What a Christian yea are! Mary, you will never forget how your father has loved you. Good-night, Mary, good-night." He then turned to his eldest son. "Will, ycur coming into our home has been an unmixed blessing. You were a manly boy. You have become an exemplary man. You love God and His church. How proud I am of such a son! You will continue to grow in every Christian grace and virtue. You have your father's lave and blessing. Good-night, Will, goodnight." j. Charlie was next. Charlie had fallen under evil influences and had grievously disappointed his father and mother- The dying man skipped him and spoke to the youngest chijd, a beautiful young girl. "Grace, your ccming was like the breaking of a new day in our home. You have been a song of gladness, a ray of light. You have filled our hearts with music. When not long-ago, you surrendered your life to Christ, your father's cup of happiness was full to overflowing. Good-night, little girl. Good-night." He then called Charlie to his'side. "Charlie, what a fine promising boy you were. Your father and mother believed you would develop into a great and noble man. We gave you all the opportunities that we gave

to the other children. If there has been any difference, you yourself must admit that that difference has been in your favor. We have done the best we could do for you, Charlie. But you have disappointed us. You have followed the broad and downward way. You have not been guided by our advice. You have not heeded the warning of God's Holy Word. You have not harkened to the call of the Savior. But I have always loved you, Charlie, and I love you still. God only knows how much I love you. Good-bye, Charlie- Good-bye, good-bye!" Charlie seized his father's hand and between his sobs cried out: "Father, why have you said 'Good-night' to the others, and 'Good-bve' to me?" "For the simple reason, Charlie, that I will meet the other members of the family 'in the morning,' but by all the promises that assure us cf a reunion and give me hope of having them with me again, by those statements of God's Word I can have no hope of seeing you 'over there.' It's good-bye, Charlie, good-bye." Charlie fell on his knees by his dying father's bed and cried cut in the agony of his soul, praying God to forgive his sins and allow him the hope of meeting his father again- . "Do you mean it, Charlie? Are you in earnest?" "God knows I am," said the heart-broken young man. "Then God will hear you and save you, Charlie, and it is not 'goodbye,' but 'good night.' Good night. I am so grateful to God that it is not 'good-bye,' but only 'good night.' Good night, my boy." And he was gone. Charlie is now a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and is looking forward to the time..whe,nhe will hear hi$, sainted father exi claim, "Good morning, Charlie. I'm so glad' the night is done and the day has come. Is it not a glad, great hour? Good morning, Charlie, good morning." O members of the same home circles: husbands, wives, fathers,, mothers, sons, daughters, loved ones, you who are bound not only bv ties of blood but the stronger cords of a love that is sweeter than life: the day is ending; the morning is coming. They are making for you a little bed yonder in God's acre. When the shaaows fall and you go to deep to await those who love you, will it be "good-bve" or ' a short "good night"? Sel. Tract.
