spokesman declared at Ottawa that the Russians were making "political capital" put of the Canadian espionage case. Shortly after receipt of a Moscow broadcast charging that Canada in holding its

BLAST TRAPS GERMAN MINERS Hundreds of miners have been trapped in the "monopole" coal mine between Dortmund and Wert in the Ruhr, following an underground explosion, it was reported last night. It was feared it might be the worst mine disaster in the Ruhr in the present century. It was reported that more than 500 men were trapped in the mine and most of them were believed doomed. A BBC broadcast said 13 persons, including three British Army officers who were mining engineers, were saved. Nine bodies were said to have been recovered.

CONVICT CAB DRIVER IN STUDENT'S DEATH Joseph W. Smith, 29-year-old Bloomington taxicab driver, was convicted of reckless homicide and fined $500 last night in connection with the death of an Indiana University student. A Circuit Court jury which heard the case deliberated three and one-half hours before returning the verdict. Defense attorneys said there would be no appeal. The charge was filed in the death of Frederick D. Holland of Indianapolis, who was killed by Smith's cab Jan. 20, 1945. Anna Catherine Lewis of Evansville was killed in the same accident.
