22 N. Court Sullivan "Everything For Your Babv"
THE ISLAND came into view. It was just the same, after 36 years, with the grey granite houses of St. Pierre piling up and up upon the rocks. William and Marianne were standing on the deck, silent, waiting, Old Nick in his cage beside them. In their hearts they were blessing Marguerite, for she had done so much tor them. They had only to open the door of No. 3 Le Paradis and walk in: , And as they did William let out a queer, strangled cry. Marianne gazed past him . . . into the eyes of her sister Marguerite . . . and Marguerite was beautiful in age. beautiful as she had never been in her youth. Mariapne had just time for one agonized thought before her sister's arms were about her. , ...... In the weeks, that followed William 'continued to find his beloved Island unchanged, and was happy. Marianne,
busy refitting the old house, was still waiting for the happiness she had expected. And one day, in an old cupboard, she found a small box, and in it the two treasures of Mar-5" guerite's that she had not been able to bring herself to destroy when she left her home for the convent. A little wooden mouse William had carved for her when she was a little girl, and an exquisitely carved Chinese necklace, each bead carved in the likeness of birds, beasts and butterflies. Had that too been a present from William? Suddenly Marianne could scarcely breathe. She remembered now. that letter Marguerite had sent them in New Zealand, supposed to be for the two of them . '. , "I picture you surrounded by strange birds and beasts and butterflies that make a necklace of beauty . . . You have my love and devotion always . . ." It was meant for William alone!
She flung them on the sofa and, later, when William entered, she faced him, pointing to the necklace: "Hidden away!" she said, her voice hoarse with pentup emotion. "Why did you marry me, William, when you loved her best all the while? Why?" He stood there stunned, his eyes"' darting from her to the necklace and back again. "I asked your father for the wrong girl," he blurted stupidly. "I mixed up your name with Marguerite's!" Her thin, little face turned ashen. "But . . . but Marianne;" William stammered, "that's all past. I love you, my girl. I do love you!" Marianne looked up at him and saw his tawny eyes blazing with love . . . for her. She went to him. "William! William!" He crushed her to his chest. She had got him at last. The triumnh of it! Oh, the triumph of it! (THE END)
