FROM THE PORCH of their drab home, only a few feet from the Straight Creek mine in Plneville, Ky., where 31 miners were entombed during an explosion, this group, their faces etched with anxiety, keep watch as rescuers try to reach their loved ones. Seven men rescued from the mine survived the ordeal while five have died after reaching safety. Nineteen men are as yet unaccounted for, but the search is being delayed due to underground fires.
