UP FROM THE DEPTHS ol the shattered, flre-biacfcened Straight CreeK Coai mine in Pineville, Ky., come begrimed rescue workers (top) with Huey Miller, one of the trapped miners found alive far below the surface. He lies on the floor of the caf covered by a blanket after spending 53 hours in the explosion-torn shaft along with 30 fellow miners who were also entombed by the blast. At bottom, Miller is carried on a stretcher on his way to Pineville Hospital. ,In addition to Miiler, rescue squads found eight other miners alive behind a barricade, but one died before he could be brought up. , ' (International)
