. LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK , The decision arrived at by the representatives of the three nations which possess the secret (for. the time being) of the atom bomb President Truman, Prime Minister Attlee of Great Britain and Prime Minister Mackenzie King of Canada, was to withhold the secret until "effective safeguards" have been put into operation by the United Nations Organization. The final paragraphs of their communique read : "Faced with the terrible realities of the application of science to destruction, every nation will realize more urgently than before the overwhelming need to maintain the rule of law among nations and to banish the scourge of war from the earth ... "This can only be brought about by giving whole-hearted support to the United 'Nations Organization, and by consolidating -and extending its authority, thus creating conditions of : mutual, trust, in which all peoples will be free to dewtM, themselves to the arts of peace. It is our firm resolve to wOrkj without reservation to achieve these ends." sTh people of the world the littie people, the citizens who'make up the various ountries, will all say a prayerful "amf n" to that. Not one of-'them wants another war. We've given, the blood of two genera tibns to stop war, now. And we all kfcow that "the next one" majMgnd the world itself, Scientists! admit" that a succession of atomic bombs might set off th$ nitrogen frani" which makes up:,a large part of our atmosphere, and literally explode the eartlfinto kingdom come. "Our job' Bradd said, "is to keep you gay as. a gopher."
JINNY was more cheerful during dinner and later Bradd was called by Cass for his skillful help. Their old friend had never been more admirable as he sat down beside her bed and took charge of their muted terror. "It's nothing to worry over," he said. "Our chief job, Jinny, is the agreeable one of keeping you gay as a gopher . . ." Jinny refused to have a nurse, but in the weeks following she did, with omissions, "take care of herself." Cass, however, was taut and shaky, agonizingly aware that she might die. Sometimes Jinny was little and bewildered and dung to Case. Sometimes she was irritated by the unreasonableness of being ill and turned to Bradd, who chirped, "Cheer up, baby. You behave better than His Honor says." Cass wondered if they did not depend too much on ISradd's friendly presence but he was glad of the alliance.
