PLOW UNDER NITROGEN LAFAYETTE, Ind.. Farmers who plow under nitrogen for corn, can often do so more con

veniently in the fall and with out loss of nitrogen. This is contrary to the previous opinion that this must be a spring practice. During the past growing sea son Purdue University agrono mists demonstrated that high nitrogen fertilizers such as an 8-8-8 ammonium, sulfate or cyanamid can be plowed under in the fall on most soils without appreciable loss of nitrogen by leaching.' It is not recommended on sandy soils or other soils with excellent internal drainage. The very wet growing season of 1945 gave a severe test to the fall piowed under nitrogen. Lafayette and Rochester tests of the fall and spring plowed under nitrogen plots showed a production of only three bushels per acre less on the fall plowed plots as against those spring plowed. . It is extremely important that the nitrogen used is an ammonium or ammonium forming type of fertilizer such as 8-8-8 or pyanamid. When sodium nitrate was applied .on the plow sole and the movement of the .nitrogen in the soil was followed by chemical tests throughout the winter and summer it was found that practically all of the nitrogen was leached , out of the soil by corn planting time but when ammonium sulfate was used, none of the nitrogen had moved out of reach of the corn plants. INDIANAPOLIS (UP) Chet Harrison of Indianapolis investigated when the wrens vacated the birdhouse he built above his grape arbor. He found a fat toad had dispossessed them. Harrison could explain the toad's presence eight feet above the ground only by the conclusion that a bird must have carried it up when it was small. It had grown twice as large as the opening of the birdhouse and was imprisoned inside.

VACCINATE FOU WINTER FOWX POX LAFAYETTE. Ind., Whilo vaccination for fowl pox al this latp date ia of questionable value, it may be used to some advantage where the disease has already appeared and affected less than ten to fifteen percent of the flock. This observation was -mada by J. W. Sicer, Purdue University extension poultryman. who reminds flock owners that the best time for vaccination against fowl pox is in the summer or early autumn. However, should the disease appear, . the first likely indication being scabby sores on the comb or around thr? eyes, vaccination with pigeon strain pox vaccine should be 1 given at once.
