Sullivan's Golden Arrows marked up their third gridiron victory
of 1945 with a thrilling 12-0 verdiet over Garfield high school's : veteran Purple Eagles in a game ! played in the mud at Memorial ' Stadium in Terre Haute Friday i night. j Coach Bill Jones' scrappers took advantage of two scoring opportunities in determined fashion, pushing over a touchdown early in the game via the sky-route and 1 clinching the honors with Adam . Sajko's . touchdown dash with ! about five minutes left in the contest. Garfield's only serious bid was halted by the gun at halftime. I Although Garfield offered rugl.ged competition all the way and ' piled up eight first downs to three for the. winners,' the Sullivan team was mighty (potent on defense when the Terre Haute club got near scoring territory and several times broke up their drives by pounding the big Eagle ball carriers back for losses. Garfield's defense was formidable much of the time but the Jones boys had the stuff to touch off the victory spark when their big chances came. ; The wet ball was about as elusive as a greased pig and ! fumbles were frequent, however, ; Sullivan lost the pigskin only j three times while Garfield fumbled nine times.
.j Soon after the Eagles kicked off .the ball squirted out of the haVids of Loudermilk and Neff recovered ifor the Terre Haute boys on Sullivan's 40. After one play Mc-
Crocklin recovered a Garfield bobble on the 50-yard stripe, the Arrows were forced to punt but gained heavily when Cooley picked up a fumbie on the Garfield 22 on second down. Diminutive Bill Pierson roared around end to the Garfield 8 and Sajko Sit the line for two before Sajko hit Cooley in the end zone for a score. The pass completely fooled the defenders and Cooley. was out
there all by himself. Sajko's drop kick for the po'int was blocked, j A punting duel occupied most cf the remainder of the first per-' iod and the second, with Sajko and the Garfield kicker doing some outstanding work consider-, ing the condition of the ball. Many of Sajko's kicks were booming high ones that traveled 50 yards and better and had a great deal to do with the ultimate outcome of the game. j ! Garfield opened up late in thej second quarter after recovering one of their own fumbles. After getting a first down on Sulli-1 van's 35, Center ran" seven yards and a 5-yard penally against the Arrows gave them another first down on the 23. Max Cooley, who played a powerful defensive game throughout, drove a Garfield car-1 rier back 15 yards and they lost
10 more on the next play to squelch all hope. i But Garfield came back after recovering a Sullivan fumble on the Arrow 40 and Bland took a pass on Sullivan's 26 for first down. Another forward and lateral moved the ball to Sullivan's 10. Garfield lost a yard and the half ended. , Sullivan-perked up as the second half opened and moyed into Garfield territory on running plays, however, both teams stalled in midfield for a time. Before the quarter ended the old Statue of Liberty play backfired for Sullivan with Radtke of Garfield getting the ball on Sullivan's 38-yard line, A short pass and a drive by McGee made it first down on Sullivan's 27 as the quarter end-' ed. Sullivan took over after Garfield lost 12 yards in four plays. I Sullivan later got a fumble on the Garfield 38 and promptly went to work. A 15-yard penalty on the Eagles helped and set them

back to the 18. Pierson went five yards and Sajko started off tackle and then rushed around end to hit pay dirt in the corner of the field, outrunning the entire Garfield team. A forward pass for point conversion failed as the wet ball .slipped through Cooley's fingers. Garfield fought back desperately but Pierson dimmed their hopes with a pass interception on Sullivan's 35. Sullivan played it safe, smothered Garfield's efforts when they regained the ball for the last time and were in full control at the finish. Sullivan appeared to be the
better oenditioned team despite the fact that they were outweighed almost 20 pounds to the
man and had plenty of drive left when the chips were down. The entire Arrow line was just too tough when Garfield got close enough to hope for a score, and showed their mettle as never be-1 fore this season. A near-cloudburst before the game failed to keep about 1,000; Sullivan boosters away from the battle.
