OPA TO RELEASE 14,0p0 CLERKS Price Administrator Chester Bowles disclosed that 14,000 paid clerks of local ration boards will be discharged within a few weeks as the first step in longrange plans to abolish rationing. The dismissals were made possible by removal of gasoline and all canned goods from rationing. Other discharges will follow as meats, shoes and finally sugar are made ration free. Bowles warned that OPA's job is still tremendous and said the remaining 16,000 paid employees will need the continued service of volunteers to make rationing and price control work.

FIND SURVIVORS OF U.S.S. HOUSTON Approximately 300 survivors of the old U.S.S. Houston have been located in a Japanese prison camp in Thailand, an officer of the Office of Strategic Services disclosed. Lt. Col. Nicol Smith, who worked with underground forces in Thailand, told how the Houston survivors' were found while detailing accounts of Thai underground activities to newsmen at the State Department. Two men who had been on the American heavy cruiser when it was lost to enemy action in 1942 escaped from the prison camp several weeks ago and made their way in a weakened condition through Thai jungles to a guerrilla training station. The Navy Department announced the loss of the Houston March 14,' 1942.
