GOD'S PROMISE OF A NATION
f LESSON TEXT-Genesis 17:1-10. J GOLDEN TEXT I will establish my1 .'covenant between me and thee and thy
Seed after thee In their generations for! ian everlasting covenant, to be a God ,unto thee and to thy seed after thee.! . Genesis 17:7.
j God keeps His promises. It may ,have appeared that God had forgot-1 I ten, but He had not, and in our lesison we find Him ready to fulfill His -ipromise. , L We need . to.learn the lesson of ;patience, of awaiting God's time for; ;the carrying out of His purpose. He is not in any hurry, but He always ' (arrives on time. If we travel life's Iway with Him, all will be well. j j Abram found the fullness of God's Iblessing because he sought His will !for life and service. We find him I I. Walking- in God's Plan (vv. jl, 2). ; The place of blessing is not in jsome cloistered refuge where the 'circumstances of life and its problems cannot disturb, us. It isout jin the daily walk with Godt in the come, the office, the shop. I What is God's plan for the life of jthe believer? Just what He told Abram:; "Be thou perfect." Noth
ing less will do, for He is a perfect
God. His law is perfect (Ps. 19:7). He requires a perfect obedience to the perfect law (James 2:10). This was His standard for Abram, and it
can be no less for us. ' 'S
How shall we attain to it? '. Only,
in Christ can we meet and fulfill
God's plan of perfection. 1 ; :
That means that as followers, of
the Lord we are' to seek His power;
for the outworking of His gratfe inj our lives. We are not to be content
with a Christian life on a low standard or lacking any of the gracesi which God can give us. I We, too, must recognize that if God( is to give us His full measure of;
blessing, we must walk in' accordj with His will, walking in ;the light'
as He is in the. light (I John 1:7).; Much of the failure and impotence of present day spiritual life is explained by the willingness of Christians to live imperfect lives. IL Talking of God's Purpose (w. 3-8). Abram fell on his face in adora-
iti on and worship. In reverence and humility, he put himself in the place ;of subjection and service. f What happened? "God talked with fclm" .(v. 3). This man was ready kot a holy conversation with the ttt4. His attitude of body was only the outward expression of an attitude of heart which was right. So God and he talked about the purpose lot the Lord for Abram' s life. t He had been Abram, which means, 'exalted father," that is, of a family, for a tribe; now he became Abraham, ; J'the father of a multitude." i 1 0This is the first of many instances! In Scripture where a name was'
Ichanged by God to mark an impor-j jtant event, or a change of heart IFo'r. example, Jacob "the supplant-1
er"' became Israel, "a prince with; God" !CGen. 32:28); Simon became.' PeteiVv"a rock" (Matt. 16:17, 18)'.! The letter to the church at Per-j gamos speaks of the one who over1-! comes in Christ's name as having a' ne$ name written which no manj knows save he that receives it (Rev. j 2:17). The believer on Christ is a; changed man, a new creature,: whether his name be changed or not. j God Jwants to change men nasi
He changed you?. ' The promise is renewed to Abr ham. It was to his "seed," that is.
his descendants. He took the blessH ing from God's hand, accepting things that as yet were not, as though they were. God is able to make them come to pass (cf. Rom.
16-18). I in. Trusting God's Promise (vv. K io)'. ,
Down through the ages every man
in the great host to descend from Abraham was to bear the outward token that he belonged to the covenant people. This was to be a symbol of and to lead the recipient into that attitude of heart which would, bring outward rite into ful-1 Ailment &S an inward reality. . pbserve that after Abraham, it was always the" parent who thusbrought the son into the covenant. This speaks of the parental responsibility to bring the little children to the Lord, and it also gives us tha precious assurance that God is in terested in the children and ready, to receive them at the hands cf par-' 'ents, taking, them into His own ten..! jdercare. " i i Thus down through the genera jtions, Israel was to show their faith' In God, their assurance that Ka ';ould keep Hi3 promises to them, I jand their consequent eagerness that itheir families should be counted i&taj 4hev Covenant TOth God, t ,. .
AT THE CHURCHES
" CHRISTIAN SCIENCE " SERVICES 'Truth" is tha subject bl the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, July 29. . The Golden Text is: '0 lord God cf hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? . , Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face" (Psalms 89:8, 14). Among the citations .which com prise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, 'rightly dividing the word of truth" (II Timothy 2:1, 7,15). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "We cannot build safely on false foundations. Truth makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away and 'all things are become new.' Passions, selfishness, false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirituality, and the superabundance Df being is on the side of God, good" (p. 201).

THINGS ABOVE
ml Your Affections On Things Above, Not On Things On The Earth. (Colossians3:2)
K t :
PRAISE WAITETH FOR THEE They stand, the regal mounvaifafl, with crowns of spotless snow, Forever changeless, grand, sublime, while ages come and go; Each day the morning cometh in through the eastern gates, With trailing robes of pink and gold; yet still they watch and wait For that more glorious morning, till that glad message sounds "Lift up your heads, ye gates of God! the King of glory comes!" And so they stand p'erlooking earth's trouble, pain and sin, And wait the call to lift their gates and let the King come in. ' O calm, majestic mountains!. .0 .everr . lasting hills! Beside your patient watch how small ' seenv all life's joy and ills! . . "The groves are God's own temples;" the wild birds sing His praise; nd every flower in the forest dim its humble tribute pays; ?or God loves all His creatures, however weak and small; ' His grandest works give praise to Him, for lie is Lord of all.
Things occupy a tremendously important place in our lives. Too important in the opinion of many. In repent months surveys have been made and polls taken to ascertain what people most want when the war is over. Industry an business are thinking of reconversion to peace-time operations. The investigations show that people in general are thinking of things. Automobiles, refrigerators, washing machines and other' articles and gadgets almost without number are first and most frequently listed. More time and opportunity for things of the spirit and of the mind are occasionally mentioned. The Christian, too, is in danger of being swept up and carried along in the hurricane of desire for things. Yet, his deeper anil truer insight keeps him from losing sight of the "things above." On these he seeks to keep his eye and set his affections. The worldly-minded have chided the Christian for! his "other-wcrldliness." Now their own Vheaten-on-earth" fancy has been rudely shattered. But thle Christian's hope of a "new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwell" has given him the calm assurance that while "heaven and earth shall pass away" he whose affections are set on things above shall never be put to shame. ' The Christian church with its spire and its bell and its cross still point us to the sky, to where the redeemed shall see their Lord and Savior face to face in glory eternal.
