This Morning's Headlines WPB CANCELS 73 RESTRICTIONS ON PRODUCTION OF CIVILIAN GOODS. J. A. Krug outlined his program for "orderly" removal of industrial controls and asked manufacturers not to "jump the gun" on the reconversion timetable. The War Production Board chairman announced that 73 orders prohibiting or limiting the manufacture of civilian products have been revoked, as of May 10. About half the 420' orders on W.P.E.'s books will have been removed "within the next few months," he said. Those already dropped include most of the curbs on "hard goods" except for those using large quantities of metal, such as automobiles, furniture, refrigerators and stoves. Krug set July 1 as the date on which business will be given unrestricted access to such steel, copper and aluminum as is not taken up by priority orders for war and war-supporting activities.
PARLEY AT VOTING POINT. The United Nations conference, finally ia the slate of decisive action, voted down Thursday a Russian proposal to let world trade union leaders into deliberations of 3 committee working on economic and social problems.
HOUSE VOTES ITSELF ALLOWANCE. House members moved to solve their own problem of high wartime cost by voting themselve a $2,500 yearly tax-exempt expense allowance. .
RAINS, FLOODS, COLD DAMAGE CROP PROSPECTS. Unfavorable weather during April and early May, coupled with a prospective smaller production of livestock products lias toned down official hopes of a 1945 food output matching last year's record. In its May crop report the Department" of Agriculture said that freezing temperatures, excessive rains and floods during the past five weeks had caused some deterioration in crop prospects. However, it forecast a record Winter wheat crop. '
FIVE DIE IN FIRE. Death from burns last night claimed the father of four small children who perished - earlier in a fire that swept their home at Kalamazoo, Michigan. ' Donald Abbey was burned fatally in attempts to rescue his children. The mother suffered burns. Two other children were saved.
TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM CRITICAL. The public was asked Thursday to stay at home and forego all unnecessary travel this spring and summer, next fall-rand even next winter if the ' Pacific war lasts that long. Director J.' Monroe Johnson of the Office of Defense Transportation, said that witli the shift of emphasis to the Pacific war, the next 12 to 15 months will be "the most critical period in transportation history."
