LATE NEWS

. WILKES BARRE, Pa May 4. (UP) The govern

ment took formal possession of Pennsylvania's strike-bound anthracite mines today. President Truman ordered the mine seizure last night. Acting on the pres'dential order, Solid Fuels Administrator Harold Ickes took over control of the properties and ordered the miners to return to work Monday. . A spokesman for the union said the 72,000 miners will wait official word from the government and United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis to return to work. He 'said the men would abide by any government order. The hard coal mines have been idle since Monday night when the U.M.W. contract expired.

WASHINGTON, May 4. (UP) Prospects of a reduction in draft calls during the next few months got a sharp setback today from Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall. In a letter to Chairman Andrew J. May, D., Kentucky, of

the House Military Affairs committee, Marshall pointed out

that the Army had not been able to meet replacement de nands cf Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Douglas Mac

rthur for May and June and that Eisenhower's current

lesses are running at 2 000 men daily. At the s?me t:me it ws learned from an authoritative Selective Service source that there is no intention of reduc

ing the size ?f draft calls at least through June 30th. Current calls are approximately 120,000 men a month. : " " ! "
