At present he is serving with a Medical Detachment assigned to the 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. In his letter he writes: "We landed on D-Day, February 19th. We are fighting like hell luckily we are in a lull today. We have a small gas stove so we cook our chow. EARLY SUMMER MAY SEE V-DAY. Many Allied military men now believe the European war will end early next Summer rather than next Fall, after a gradual destruction of the enemy's remaining forces. This opinion appears to be shared by German civilians interviewed behind the Allied lines. The idea of a sudden wholesale collapse as a result of recent Nazi disasters is generally discounted.
LEWIS DEMANDS MEET FLAT REFUSAL. Bituminous coal operators plainly indicated last night they intend never to agree to John L. Lewis' $60,000,000 royalty demand or to elimination of the North-South wage differential. The coal operators whose contract with Lewis' United Mine Workers expires March 31, recessed the contract negotiations with Lewis to figure out how far they would go on his 18 demands for a new contract.
