Kntcrcd as second-class matter July 1, 1908 in the Postoffice at .Sullivan, Indiana, under the Act of Confess of March 3, 1879. ftiblished daily except Saturday and Sunday at 115 West Jackson St. United Press Wire Service. National Advertising Representative: J-lieis and Sinipson, 393 Seventh Avenue. New York. (1) N. V, Subscription Kale: l',y carrier, per week .'...'... 15 Cents in City . That prediction lias been confirmed as Governor Ralph F. Gates, last Saturday, completed the enactment of more than 400 new state laws by affixing his signature to the last several bills. In a brazen effort to "pay off" the party workers who

did yeoman service in the last November election the' Assembly, 'controlled almost completely by Governor Gates, raised salaries among nearly all appointive state officials and created scores of new state jobs to provide juicy plums for many who were not satisfied to accept the jobs that otherwise were available. Hut the Gates administration did not stop there. The Assembly l cached down into the counties, cities, towns and townships. and opened the pockets of the taxpayers to salary grabs by nearly all of the local officials. And those who will be the beneficiaries of the "heavy gravy," we are frank to. point out, knew quite well the salaries attached to the offices when they asked the voters for those jobs. . Since this is the public's business, and jt is an old and weft" founded axiom that "the public acts and public utterances of men in public office are public matters" we go on to point outthat most of those who will receive increased salaries from the hand of the 8-1 th, General Assembly promised!

me voters xnai tney would light against any increases in taxes. These increased salaries can be' paid only by increasing taxes. The legislature has already enacted more than one bill to increase taxes at the State level. Raising the pay of iown, city, township and county officials undoubtedly will mean increased taxes locally. The effect cf increased expenditures by public officials Under the "leadership" of the G.O.P. state organization will not be fully understood until the vast growth of bureaucracy in state government under Governor Gates" direction becomes apparent to the public. '.Bureaucracy was tilled, fertilized and fed all manner of "political vitamins" by the recent legislature and will soon burst forth in all its sinister- influence. And it was the Republican candidates who shouted against the "dangers of growing bureaucracy" -last October. : ; .WORLD WAR 11 A YEAR AGO tuary, 24 miles below Nikolayev.
