STANDARDS OF THE KINGDOM j lESSON TEXT-Matthew 5:3 10, 43-48. GOLDEN TEXT Blessed are they.
Jvhicli arc persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom o heav-,
ffen. Matthew 5:10. , I
A kingdom must have laws, and
here ve have the laws for Christ's: kingdom the kingdom of heaven
which He shall one day establish on this earth. In the" Church we have the joy of living as loyal subjects of
Christ, and hence these standards
are for our counsel and guidance. : The verses of this greatest of all discourses are addressed to those who have actually taken Christ as
King of their lives. These beatitudes are not a substitute for the
gospel. They are not laws that the unbeliever can keep and thus be
saved, for this would be utterly im
possible. Only he who knows and has called upon the power and gTace tf God in Christ can qualify to walk' lis a citizen of Christ's kingdom.
We note two thing3 in this won-
IBevful and instructive passage from
Ifcod's Word: I I. The Character of the Follower W Christ (vv. 3-10). I The eight characteristics of the 'Christian here presented are worthy 'tof extended individual attention, but Fwc can oiler only brief suggestions. l"Elessed are the . poor in . spirit" Igpeaks of humility as a commendable quality. How contradictory the present-day philosophy, which calls or self-assertion and self-reliance. (But Jesus was not mistaken. The jwoy into the kingdom of heaven is not that of assertive self-sufficiency. I "Blessed are they that mourn." pie world does not believe that 'statement. It shims the house of mourning. It tries without avail to ,philosophize away the fact of sorjrow. The Christian, on the other "hand, feels with his. fellow man and thus receives a blessing. One cau ircally learn from sorrow.

AT THE CHURCHES
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES 1 "Life" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, January 21. The Golden Text is: "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death" (Psalms 68:20). "In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. For thou hast delivered my soul from death : wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling-, that I may walk before God in the light of the living" (Psalms 56:11, 13). "I shall not die. but live, and declare the works of the Lord" (Psalms 118:17). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following- passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "The belief that matter has life results, by the universal low of mortal mind, in a belief in death. So man, tree, and (lower arc supposed to die; but the fact remains, that God's universe is spiritual and immortal" (d. 289).

'I v,-allccd a mile with Sorrow, 7 And ne'er a word said she; But. oh, the things 1 learned from her When Sorrow walked with me.
I "Blessed are the meek." Poverty tif spirit comes when a man rightly pees himself, and has a sympathetic touch with sorrow. Then he inherits the earth," because he tr ly comes to enjoy it as a .place service and Christian growth, jm pnt because he has a deed to a sin gle foot ot its soil. "It is Ihc hunger and lhii-st for righteousness (v. G). and not the possession of. it, that is blessed" ;FIummcr). Self - satisfied people know nolliing of the glory of hnvinn their hunger and thirst satisfied by Cod. We have here ai:;u Ihc Chris! t in1:? spirit of mercy which invites divine mercy; a purity of heart, cleanness of mind, and sincerity of purpose, which enable a man really to s"s God even in this impure world: that Cbristlikc spirit which makes him a peacemaker in a fighting worldyes, that spirit which makes hurt like the Master in sweetly be: 4 'unjustified persecution. These itlced arc the marks of the man who 'follows Christ as King. 11. The Couduct of the Follower of H'hrlsl vv. 43-40).
r There can possibly be no more sejveie lest of a man's Christian chartactcr than the maimer in which he "SJreafs his enemies. Many who pa.3 jthe other tests meet failure (at least iin part) at this point. ; It is no easy thing to love your 'pnemies, but it is the sta-.idard of Christ, and He will enable us to live iup to it. Now is a good time to put it into practice, not only personally, but nationally. . ' There can be no doubt that love for the brethren will be a more inlitaate and satisfying experience because they return our affection (v. 4b). Anyone con do that and enjoy it. Enemies often return haired for our love they persecute us (v. 41). But we ore still to love them. ' That love must move us to treat them kindly and to pray for them. Someone says, "11 can't be done." ,Trs. "it can by the grace ot God in Christ, and it is being done. ' We nel-d to exercise care lest we lalJ into the easy habit of speaking with derision or scorn of the un"7 godly that wicked, dissipated
neighbor who hangs around taverns and other questionable places. Let us never condone their sin that we should hale but may God help us to love' them and lead them to Christ. This lesson is indicated as being a temperance lesson. The application can only be made indirectly.
but it may have value. The use of
alcohol is so destructive of everything that is good, that it is quite obvious it is not in accord with
these standards of the kingdom or
i. It is time some church peo
ple decided whether they want to be
long to the world or belong to
Christ. If the latter is their purnose we believe the only consistent
position to take is that of abstinence ''era alcoholic liquors,

Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. St. Luke 4:24. Truth Is The Word Of God; Will You Listen? "Jesus was a man of exceedingly strong- character. Wherever He went great crowds followed and even those who denied they believed this man to have unusual powers, would crowd around earnestly hungering to hear His every word. Now Jesus was thirty years of age when He came to John1 to be baptized of him that He might go into1 the wilderness and be tempted by the Devil as we learned in last Friday's review tof the writings of Saint Luke. After His baptism He went about the lands of Judea preaching and teaching and word of His wisdom and healing powers went before Him. So wherever He went, the people brought the sick and afflicted for Him to heal and wherever there was faith wherever He found a person who sincerely believed Him capable of healing, the deed was done. Even to those possessed of the Devil (people whom we would say today are absolutely no good) He gave His blessing and drove out the Devil from their bodies, making them clean and whole. On this sabbath day of which we will center our discussion, Jesus had come to Nazareth, the city of His boyhood days," where He had lived and grown and where his father, Joseph, was a carpenter. 1 When He went into the church (synagogue) they handed Hint the book of the prophet Esaias and when He had opened it to the tivords, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor: he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord," He closed it and handed it again to the minister. Looking deep into the eyes of the congregation He said, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." This day, He said, is the time to accept the Lord for this is the day Esaias told of that Jesus would heal, preach and deliver. This day He would set free those who were captives (remember these were the days of the Roman Empire and these people were enslaved) and liberty. Hvoutd" be' for all men if they would only believe. But they looked at Him scornfully and said, "Is this not Joseph's son?" And He answered, "Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, 'Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.' Verily' I say unto you. No prophet is accepted in his own country." What would you, mother and father, say today if a youth from your town suddenly grown to manhood Should begin to teach and to preach and you realized that he had some wisdom, some wonderful power that you needed. Would you help him, try to believe irt him or would you say, "what can this fellow know that we do not lor he has grown up among us even as a carpenter's son." People are always ready to believe a prince or a rich man but when a poor fellow offers the truth, the lasting truth, they do not believe, do not want to believe. And Jesus told them of how the land of Israel in the days of Elias was struck with a great famine wiien the heaven was shut up for three years and six months. This was in the days of Elias when there were many widows in Israel but unto none of these was sent the prophet Elias, except to a widow woman in Sarepta (a city in Sid on). Even the many lepers were not cleansed by the prophet, except for one leper named Naaman who was , a Syrian. Only these two people were worthy! of cleansing. They did not doubt and were not asking proof that this was the Son of God. What they had heard, and the comforting feeling when He was near convinced them of His identity. They were aided and healed. When the people heard this parable they were angered for they knew the meaning of His words. They were unbelieving, cynical people who were like unto these many widows of Israel and the lepers. So they threw Him out of the temple out of His own house and they led Him to the top of a steep hill above the city of Nazareth and made to cast Him down that they might kill Him. ' . But filled with the Spirit of the Lord Jesus calmly walked through their midst and went His way back to Capernaum, the city by the Sea of Galilee. Calmly, triumphantly the truth walked among the lies and they were afraid to touch it. Jesus was and IS the symbol of truth. If a man lives a life of truth, he can be no better man for the essence of the word of God is truth. Jesus lived and preached the truth For its purpose He died that you might believe His almighty truth. Today millions are dying for the truth and His blessing of Liberty for all men. Jesus read Esaias' word to the people, ". . .to preach deliverance to the captives, ... to set at liberty them that are bruised." The souls of men need liberty as well as their bodies do and the truth of God is their salvation. Come to Church Sunday. Wherever you live there is a church and it needs you. ATTEND SERVICES SUNDAY
