: JESl'S BEGINS HIS MINISTRY ! JLKSSON TEXT-Ma tlhew 3 : 13 4 : 11. -! ' GOLDEN TEXT Thou shall worship the Lord tliy God. and Him only shalt .ihoti t-crvo. Matthew 4:10. i Heady for set-vice litis is the next scene front our Lord's lite I which conies before us in Matthew. Thirty years had passed since His birth, but these are hidden in

ilencc, save-for the one glimpse of Him in the temple which is given

only by Luke. These were not years of idleness or luxury. He was obedient to Joseph : nd Mary. Ho worked in the carpenter shop. He fellowshiped with God's people, and best of all, with His heavenly Father. Ho showed obedience and faithfulness in life's ordinary tilings. And then, all at once, the day of His public ministry was at hand. , His baptism and temptation were a part, the opening event, of that .ministry. We And Him: I. Ideutilied With Sinners (3: 13-15). John, tlie fiery forerunner of Jesus, had come with a burning message cf repentance, sud sinners were corning to him to be baptized as a sign of their contrition. Suddenly Jesus appeared. John pointed to Him as the "Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world" 'John 1:29). When He offered Himself for baptism, John demurred. There was no sin Li feus that He should need baptism. There was no occasion for Him to express in a special act His obedience, for He always did the will of God. (Hcb. 10:7)! Why then was Jesus baptized? We find the answer in the central purpose for which He came int6 the 'world, namely, to save sinners. Here at His official entrance upon that work He. who though He knew no sin was to become sin for us, took tlie sinner's place in baptism. It was not because He had Himself sinned, but because He was to become the substitute for the sinner. What marvelous condescension and grace! II. Apjt'n-cd or Coil (3:l(i, 17). CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES "Sacrament" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, January 14. The Golden Text is: "The hour cotneth, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: Tor the Father aeeketh such to worship him" (John 4:23). . - . Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up" (Psalms ;:?). "And when thou prayest, thou phalt not be as the hypocrites arc: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of thif streets, that 'they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you. They shall have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly" (Matthew 6:5, 6). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Cod is not moved by the brent h of praise to do more than He has already done, nor can the infinite do less than bestow all good, since He is unchanging wisdom and Love. We. can do more for ourselves by humble fervent petitions, but the All-loving docs not grant them simply on the ground of lip service, for lie already knows all" (p. 2).

gentleness, meekness, purity, peace and love. Out of the eternal dwelling places in heaven came tlie voice of the eternal Father expressing His approval and pleasure in His son. The person and work of Christ bear their own eommehdaiion of Him to Jus as divine. Here we have the Father's word,' and the Holy Spirit's comling. Thus we have here the entire iTrinily. , III. Templed by Satan (4:1-11). '. A lime of testing was ahead. Jesus idid not fear it, but notice that He Id id not seek it either. He was led jby the Spirit into this great conflict. We may learn that we must not '.seek nor put ourselves in the way of temptation, but when it comes we may meet it without fear. God is with us. j Ho was tempted as the Messiah, jand the Son of God, and it was a real testing, one from which we need to learn what to do when tempted. It Was threefold: physical, spiritual and vocational. . l. The Physical Temptation. Forty days of conflict with Satan made His body hungry. Under such circumstances it was a terrific temptation to use His divine power to make bread. He could have done

it, but He did not. One doesn't have.

to live, but one does have to obey and honor God. ' Jsote how' effectively Christ used Scripture (from Deuteronomy have you read it lately"). It is the only sure answer to Satan's temptations, but you must learn it it you are going to use it. 2. Tlie Spiritual (Temptation. Here Satan asked Him to presume

tm tlie grace of God. If he cannot get you to abandon your faith, he ,w ill urge you to go to some fanatical and unscriptural extreme in using St. : God always cares for ID's own then they are in the place whore Ha wants them to be, but He docs not deliver us from foolhardy and unnecessary risks which we want to call "faith." . 3. Tlie Vocational Temptation. .Christ had come into this world to wrest from Satan, the usurper (who is now Hie prince of this worldJohn 12:31), the kingdoms of this rworld. Satan suggested to Him thai He could accomplish this by simply bowing down to him thus escaping Calvary's cross. i Satan is busy urging men to take spiritual bypaths'. ' He has his own leaders who skillfully evade and avoid thetross. They have a religion ..without the offense of the cross, but. mark it well, it is not Christianity, even though it bears that name. ' Jesus met and defeated Satan by the use of Scripture, and by honoring God the Father. Jesus' resistance of the devil caused him to go away. It still works. Read James 4:7. Then came the angels to minister to Him. Victory over the enemy uf our souls brings peace and spiritual refreshment

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Julius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of the land of Judea and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee (subslate of Judea), there came the prophesied call from the wilderness to John, the son of Zachaiias. And the voice of God in the wildnerness said, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." f So John began baptizing in the name of God and there came to him great multitudes to be baptized but they were without repentance and thought only to evade the wrath of God by pretending to partake of the ceremony. And John said to them, "O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth, therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham to our father' for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham." Of this he meant that being a child of Abraham was not enough, that God was able to elevate his present children to that position held by Abraham, the father that they should bear children worthy of God's kingdom. He went on, "The axe is laid to the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. So, as John Isaid, every tree that bears evil fruit is cut down and bad trees can come from the best of families, leven the family of Abraham. And when the people heard this they knew their thoughts were known and they said to John. "What shall we do then?" And he told them if a man has two coats let him give one to him who has none and if he has meat and another has none, share it with him. And there came publicans, the tax collectors of the land, asking what they should do to repent and be baptized. John told them to take no more from the poor than was appointed them by God for their livelihood. And there, also, came soldiers, and he told them to do no violence to any man, to accuse no one falsely (as was the custom of political officials in those days when they wanted an excuse to kill someone) and to be content with thefr wages. When all the people heard these teachings of John they thought him the prophesied Christ and John answered them saying, "I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." And he foretold that Jesus had the power like a fan in his hand and would use it to gather the wheat (all the people) to him but that he would burn the chaff (the unrighteous) with unquenchable fire. And many more things he told the people, vhich4was his destined duty prepared to bring about the coming of Jesus. At this time Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan where he was baptized of John. "Jesus, when he was baptized, when up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and there came from heaven the voice of God, saying, 'This is my loved Son, in whom I am well pleased.' " And Jesus proceeded into the wilderness. And during this time Jesus was led by the spirit into the wilderness w here he was tempted by Satan and where he fasted forty days and, forty nights. Here the devil tempted h.;m to prove his title, the Son of God, by turning the stones to bread, to throw himself down from the temple pin-' nacle where he had placed Jesus, saying that he could do himself no harm if he were the Son of God, and he tempted him further by offering him the kingdoms cf the world if he would worship Satan. But Jesus answered the first saying, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that prcceedeth out of the mouth of God:" to the second he said, "It is written. Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God;" and to the third and final temptation he said, "Get thee hence. Satan: for it is written. Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." And when Herod heard of the preachings of John and of his baptismal exercises, he sent out an order for his arrest and threw him in prison. So the proprecy of John's imprisonment came to pass. But John had said to those whom he baptized, "The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent ye!" His mission was done. The prophecy was fulfilled. The days since the action of these deeds are many but the words are ever true, "the kingdom of God is at hind." ..To illustrate the full meaning of the fulfillment of God's word one needs only to po;nt at the world today. "There shall be wars and rumors of wars as long as the world stands" was w hat Jesus told the people. But He also said that a righteous man could ask God to destroy his enemies. Why don't you join the people of Sullivan' and Sullivan County at the churches this Sunday. Your prayers are needed to destroy the enemy. j COME TO CHURCH
