DID NOT ESCAPE MARSHAL
William Morgan, South End K<’^1dent, WantcHl at Jeffersonville For Breaking His Carole, is Caught After Exciting Run.
MARSHAL IS ANOTHER LIGHTBODY
Greeneastle has another runner, who bids fair to outshine Lightbody. He Is Marshal Charles Reeves. The sprint which brought this news to light occurred near the county jail at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Marshal Reeves and Officer Stone were just taking William Morgan, a resident of the southern part of the city, to jail on charges preferred against him by the authorities of the Jeffersonville Reformatory. Morgan lias been out on parole for some time and ttie officials just learned that he has not been living the straight life, he was ordered to, and so sent word to Marshal Reeves to arrest him and bring him back. The ex-convict was located Monday but escaped the officers at that time. Tills afternoon, however. Marshal Reeves and Officer Stone got him and were taking him to jail when the episode occurred. Morgan jerked loose from Hip officers as they were nearing the jail and ran west on Washington Street. Marshal Reeves immediately pulled his revolver and fired throe shots at the fleeing man, one taking effect in his arm. This only made Morgan run the faster. Seeing that that was of no avail the Marshal started after him and it was then that the Marsha] surprised his friends by showing that he was good for any track team. Officer Stone ollowed but fell out during the long run but Reeves kept right on and nailed his man out in the pasture behind Alex l.ockridge's residence. Morgan was brought back to the jail and the prison authorities notified. The officers returned him to that place Tuesday evening.

TRACTION MAKES A THREAT
If Bra/.il Continues to Kick About How it is Treated by Hie Inti-riir-han it May Im- Cut off of the T. II., I. vV E. Traction Company Map.
COULD on SOUTH OF THE TOWN
According to a statement made here Thursday by a traction man, Brazil should be careful how it treats the T. H., I. & E. Traction Company. If it don’t that city may be cut off of the traction company map. The recent actions of Brazil in boycotting the interurban and otherwise making trouble for the line lias caused much had feeling among the officials at Indianapolis. According to their statements, Brazil fought for several changes in the running of the cars and after much discussion, these were granted to them. Then, “like a baby or some spiteful girl,’’ as one of the employes puts it, they immediately struck for more. It was in the agreement made by the citizens last week, that they would repeal the speed limit in the city of Brazil at their next council meeting, if the company would make certain changes. The company acquiesced and immediately made the changes. Now the citizens say that unless some more changes are made or the former schedule returned, they will not only refuse to repeal that ordinance but will start the boycott again. According to the statement of one of the higher officials of the company this action may prove very disastrous for the Clay County town as the traction company cannot change its whole business every other day just to suit the whims of one section of its business. This official stated this morning that the company might cut out Brazil entirely and run their line to tho south of that city. They have already planned for a line to run northwest from Cloverdale and they might plan to run the T. H., I. & E. line a little south of Brazil to meet it. In this way they would secure much traffic indeed, they say, much more than they ever hope to get from that city of “knockers.” If this plan was executed, it would cause little trouble to Greeneastle, as the run to Terre Haute would be made in about the same time. The only change would he that those wishing to go to Brazil on the intorurban, would go as far as Harmony, or somewhere near there and then furnish their own transportation for the remainder of the trip. Care of the Hands. If you wish to keep your hands soft and white keep a jar of almond meal on the washstand. Oatmeal and even cornmeal will do just as well. After washing the hands In soap and warm water rub the meal on them generously. This will keep the hands wonderfully soft aud white. For stains and obstinate spots keep a cake of toilet pumice stone on hand and rub the spots with this and they will quickly be removed. Dry every part of the bauds on a soft towel and then rub in a good cream that you find agrees with your skin. Many people think that the winter time is the only time that one should apply cold cream to the hands, but this is a mistake, for one washes the hands so many times a day that most of the natural oil of the hands Is removed, and this should he replaced by massaging them with cold cream. When the hands are wrinkled from long immersion in the water rub them with vinegar before washing them.
Cold Boiled Ham. A good slice of cold boiled ham Is enough to animate the ribs of death, but how often it tastes of the rusty skin In which it was cooked. First scrub the ham, using plenty of borax water and a scrubbing brush. This will In no way injure the meat. Rinse it thoroughly and put whole into a kettle of lukewarm water. I.et It cook gently until the skin can he removed. Take it out and vi;h a sharp Knife remove the skin, then put the ham into fresh boiling water. Cook it until tender, but not en . li so It will fall apart. Put it Into a large dripping pan, sprinkle lightly with sugar and score the fat t • n soluble a check larboard. Insert a few doves. Frequently haste the ham and let It brown slowly. Remove from the oven and let it chill. A ham may he garnished ami sent to the table w!,<>!\ if one has a proficient carver, otherwise it is best to slice the meat in the kitchen before it is served.

OWEN EDITOR GETS LAST LAUGH
And the Publisher of Hra/.il Time" a Hot One at the Same Time —All Alkout the Recent Heath of The Separate Court Hill.
Under the headline “Fool Killer .Missed Him" the Owen County Democrat takes a hot shot at the editor of the Brazil Times and roasts Bobby to a turn for some of his smart sayings. The Owen County Democrat says: The article copied from the Brazil Times by a Greeneastle paper without comment in which it was said "next fall the assassination of Lincoln is to he announced in Owen County,” was just a few hours premature, for Governor Marshall has assassinated the separate court bill for Clay County. So there is where the assassination was announced and not in Owen County as the Times said it would be next fall. The fool killer has evidently never visited Brazil, or the editor of the Times would not be living to pencil such slanderous articles against his neighbors. He may be witty, well educated, and part his hair In the middle, but his attempt at fun making has reacted.
URGE CARE FOR ORPHAN
Miss Alice Gray-Ion, of the linlinnai-o-lis Prohate Court, ami the Hon. Sumner W. Haynes, of the Westfield Home for Orpheus, Address Meeting at the Court House.
BOTH SPEAKERS WELL INFORMED
A large audience gathered In tho court room at the court house last Saturday to hear the speeches of Miss Alice Graydon, of Indianapolis, and Hon. Sumner W. Haynes, of tho Westfield Home for Orphans, on the cases of orphan and neglected children. Although the meeting was not called until shortly after 2 o'clock, the court house lobby was crowded by 1:30 with people waiting to get seats in the court room. The speakers of the afternoon were well appreciated and the large audience which gathered to hear them shows the interest shown in their work, for nearly everyone in the county has heard in some way of the talks which they delivered here a few weeks ago. The meeting was given by tin 1 County Boards of Associated Charities and Children’s Guardians. Mr. Haynes is the originator of the home for Orphans at Westfield and his suecess in working out his line of work has won him much praise from all over the state. He does not believe in tho keeping up of institutions for the case of these unfortunate ones, but rather believes in having some home like places to keep them until a real home, with a “real” mother can be secured for them. In other words, he urges expense—not in the furnishing of the present institutions hut rather in finding of people who will place the youngsters in real homes. .Miss Graydon’s add rets was on the same lino and as she is connected with the Indianapolis Probate Court, she lias had much experience in this line. The meeting was a success anil the boards were heartily congratulated upon their securing these speakers for the benefit of the Putnam County residents.

WATERWAY OUT OF STREAM
Civic Organization Decides to Have ; Famous Indiana ami Illinois JMvcr Dredged—Drainage of 300,000 j Acres of Lund Also Object.
As a result of a movement launched in meetings held in Momencc, 111., and South Bend, Mid., a civic organization, known as the Indiana aud Illinois Navigation and Power Company, has been formed and incorporated under the laws of the State for the purpose of dredging aud otherwise improving the Kankakee River. An appropriation will be asked of Congress to aid in the work. The articles of incorporation have been filed by Francis M. Trissal, of Chicago, one of the incorporators and a director. Tlie following statement concerning the purposes of the organization was made by Mr. Trissal: “The objects of this association are to bring about a combination of commercial and manufacturing interests with agricultural interests to the end that the Kankakee River may be so improved as to make it a transportation waterway and thereby also afford an outlet for the drainage of about 500,000 acres of land. To further the object of this association, a corporation was formed at Chicago Saturday, February 20, under the name of the Indiana and Illinois Navigation and Power Company. “This corporation is formei, as stated in its articles, for the purpose of improving the navigation of the Kankakee River and for the creation of hydraulic power thereon, not impeding the navigation of the same. It is provided that the contemplated improvement of the river shall extend over tiie entire portion thereof within the jurisdiction of the State of Indiana from its source at South Bend, in St. Joseph County, through and bordering the counties of St. Joseph, Starke, Laporte, Porter, Jasper, Newton and Lake to the lino dividing the States of Indiana and Illinois, and thence continuing and extending the improvements along the channels of the river through the counties of Kankakee and Will and into the county of Grundy, in Illinois, to the point where its waters unite with the waters of the Desplaines River to form the Illinois River, under such regulations as may be prescribed by the State of Illinois. "It is the design of the promoters to solicit aid from Congress in tho way of appropriations, especially to remove a ledge of rock in the river near the state lino, their claim being based upon the fact that this river is an interstate water course, and that the duty rests on the Government to keep it free from obstructions that impede commerce between the States. “It is not the intention to ask any legislative aid in Indiana, since the rock obstruction is in Illinois. But the state of Illinois may be asked to recognize and assist the enterprise by making provisions that will carry tho upper Kankakee waters into the Illinois River. The state of Illinois, by an amendment to its constitution, adopted last November, has authorized an expenditure of $20,000,000 in the improvement of the Illinois River to tho end that it may be made a deep waterway from Chicago to the Mississippi River, and the promoters of this enterprise in Indiana and Illinois are availing themselves of the opportunity that they see iu having the Kankakee River become a part of thl.i deep waterway system, and are al > claiming that conditions have grown out of the efforts to purify the sewage from Chicago and the cities of Hammond, Gary, Indiana Harbor and East Chicago that make the waters of the Kankakee River necessary and accessible for diluting purposes. "Four years ago the Secretary of Agriculture assigned engineers from his office to make examinations of the Kankakee River and tho agricultural lands of the valley. The results of their work have now been made public and disclose that the cost of so improving the lower half of the river in Indiana alone as to make it useful as a drainage outlet would cost $1,000,000, but it is claimed that the adoption of these plans and the improvement of the river In accordance with them would make it serve the double purpose of a drainage outlet and a deep waterway for navigation. The principal part of tho contemplated work is in Kankakee County, Illinois, in the congressional district of Speaker Joseph G. Cannon, and that in Indiana in the congressional districts of Representatives Crumpacker and Barnhardt.”

The Farmer’s Wife Is very careful about her churn. Sha scalds it thoroughly after using, and gives it a sun bath to sweeten it. She knows that if her churn is sour it will taint tho butter that is made in it. The stomach is a churn. In tho stomach and digestivo and nutritive tracts are performed processes which are almost exactly like tho churning of butter. Is it not apparent then that if this stomach-churn is foul it makes foul all which is put into it? The evil of a foul stomach is not alone the had taste in the moutb and the foul breath caused by it, but tho corruption of the pure current of blood and the dissemination of disease throughout tho body. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery makes the sour and foul stomach sweet. It does for the stomach what the washing and sun bath do for the churn—absolutely removes every tainting or corrupting element. In this way it cures blotches, pimples, eruptions, scrofulous swellings, sores, or open eating ulcers and all humors or diseases arising from bad blood. If you have bitter, nasty, foul taste in your mouth, coated tongue, foul breath, are weak and easily tired, feel depressed and despondent, have frequent headaches, dizzy attacks, gnawing or distress in stomach, constipated or irregular bowels, sour or bitter risings after eating and poor appetite, these symptoms, or any considerable number of them, indicate that you are suffering from biliousness, torpid or lazy liver with the usual accompanying indigestion, or dyspepsia and ti»* ir attendant derangements. Tho best agents known to medical science for tho euro of tho above symptoms and conditions, as attested by the writings Of leading teachers and practitioners of all the several schools of medical practice, have been skillfully and harmoniously combined In Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. That this is absolutely true will be readily proven to your satisfaction If you will hut mall a postal card request to Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y., for a free copy of his booklet of extracts from the standard medical authorities, giving the names of all the ingredients entering into his world-famed medicines and showing what tho most eminent medical men of the ago say of Uiean.
