cratic caucus on Wednesday night came as a distinct surprise to the people of Indiana there can be no doubt The general regret expressed everywhere by the citizens of the state and evidenced in all but the interested newspapers make this plain. And yet this expressed regret at the defeat of Kern must not be interpreted as dislike or distrust of Shively. It is rather the expression of a regret that sprang from an almost personal regard and esteem that, without reference to party, was felt by many of the citizens of Indiana fog John W. Kern. It sprang from the belief that his defeat was accomplished by means that would not hear Investigation. The secret ballot opened the way for suspicion, and in many constituencies that were almost solid for Kern there is a feeling of doubt iu regard to the representatives of those constituencies that vot'd Wednesday night. As we say this feeling of regret has nothing to do with the relative ability of the two men. That Shively is able, experi "iced and hfinest there is no doubt.
