State Treasurer Refuse's to Take Thom From County Treasurer and Legal Rattle Follows.
THEY WISH TO SAVE INTEREST
When County Treasurer J. L. Van Natta, of Tippecanoe* County, went to Indianapolis Friday to make a seini-annual settlement with the treasurer of state, he was surprised lo have that otticial refuse to accept certificates of time deposits for that portion of the money which is returned to the county as school revenue when It is pro-rated. The county treasurer took about $,'3,000 ♦ o the state treasurer, $15,000 of the amount being in certificates of deposit. The rest was in the form of •varrants. The object in taking certificates of deposit for that money which is returned to the county, was to save the county the interest on the amount. Last year the state drew interest to which the county was entitled. The state treasurer refused to accept the certificates, demanding negotiable paper. The state treasurer threatened to sue the county treasurer for the 15 per cent, penalty in the event that settlement in negotiable paper was not made. Today the matter was brought before the county board of finance at Lafa>ette and county treasurer VanXatta returned to Indianapolis accompanied by County Attorney Geo. D. Parks. The county will insist on the state treasurer accepting the certificates, as under the depository act that is the proper plan. The commissioners adopted resolutions instructing the county treasurer to make another tender of the certificates and relieving him of all liability for such action. The resolutions state that in the event the treasurer is sued the county will, defend the action and pay all costs.

Simple Recipe for Home-Made Rlicumatism and Kidney Cure.
To relieve the worst forms of Rheumatism, take a teaspoonful of the following mixture after each meal and at bedtime; Fluid Extract Dandelion, one-half ounce; Compound Kargon, one ounce; Compound Syrup Sarsaparilla three ounces. These harmless ingredients can be obtained from our home druggists, and are easily mixed by shaking them well in a bottle. Relief is generally felt from the first few doses. This prescription forces the clog-ged-up, inactive kidneys to filter and strain from the blood the poisonous waste matter and uric acid, which causes Rheumatism. As Rheumatism is not only the most painful and torturous disease, but dangerous to life, this simple recipe will no doubt be greatly valued by many sufferers here at home, who should at once prepare the mixture to get this relief. It is said that a person who would take this prescription regular ly, a dose or two daily, or even a few times a week, would never have serious Kidney or urinary disorders or Rheumatism. Cut this out and preserve it. Good Rheumatism prescriptions which really relieve are scarce, indeed, and when you need it, you want it badly.

MOVE STATE WIDE-PROHIBITION
To carry out its stated pledges, the Anti-Saloon League will introduce at the coming session of the legislature a resolution for an amendment to the constitution to provide for state-wide prohibition. One of the league’s officials declared privately recently, however, that he and his associates realize that the legislature will not adopt the resolution. The result o the recent election in which Republicans lost control of the legislature has convinced the league leaders that the people are not ready for state-wide prohibition in Indiana. The league's platform is “Indiana a dry state by 1912,” but unless there are more radical temperance advocates among the legislators than now believtMl, the proposed amendment will not have a ghost o a show of being adopted. Unless it is put through at the coming session, there is no liklihood of Indiana's going dry before 1914, as the resolution would have to receive the support of a majority of the voters at a general election before the constitution could be amended. While the anti-saloon leaders are unwilling to admit that their hobby was responsible for the defeat of the Republicans, they are said to realize that there is a strong opposition to further enactment of temperance laws. Under the circumstances they will be satisfied if they can hold the county local option law on the boards. It is believed that the Prohibitionists, who discovered after the election that they favored county local option, will make a vigorous effort to put through a resolution or state-wide prohibition.

Relw-kalis Fntertain Their Families And Friends at a Social at the Lodge Hall Thursday—Women Present Will Conklin With Beautiful Gift.
At a meeting of the board of trustees of Indiana University, held Friday afternoon at the Denison Hotel, a committee consisting of Judge Joseph H. Shea of Seymour, J. W. Fesler, of Indianapolis and Edwin Corr and Ira Batman of Bloomington, was appointed to draft an enabling act for presentation and passage at the coming session of the Legislature, authorizing the Indiana University to take over the property of the Purdue Seliool of Medicine, consolidated last spring with tin Medical School of Indiana University The question of co-operating with the Indiana State Normal School and Purdue University in . asking the legislature to increase the respective state tax rates but no action was taken. It is known, however, that the three schools contemplate such a movement because ff the necessity for better facilities to meet the increased demand for higher education. Indiana University and Purdue University now receive one cent for every $100 of assessed property valuation in the state and the normal school receives three-fourths of a cent. The two universities will probably ask that their rate be doubled, while the normal school, It is understaad, will ask that its rate be increased one-third. In addition, the normal school will ask an appropriation of $178,000 for the erection of a building for science and manual training classes. Prof. Woodburn was granted leave of absence yesterday in order that he might spend half a year in work at Leland Stanford University. An appropriation of $075 was made for the purchase of law books for the school of law at the university.— Bloomington World.
SAW HEW YEAR USHERED IN
WHEN THEY TAKE OFFICE
The Rebekahs entertained their families and friends with a social Thursday night at their lodge room. While all were having a gay time and the merriment was at its highest they were suddenly called to order and were informed that there was business of a very serious character to be transacted right then and there, and that some of those present would be surprised at the seriousness of it. Of course some were dumbfounded at the turn affairs seemed to be taking. Then imagine their astonishment when Mrs. Nell Warner arose and in a neat little speech presented Mr. Will Conklin with a beautiful watch fob and charm in behalf of the Degree Staff, for his untiring energy in drilling the team to perfection. Well surprise wasn’t in it for Will at least. He was too astonished to speak for a few moments. Then after a little while he, with a tremor in his voice, thanked the ladies very nicely. Then to cover up his emotion Jim Albin maJe a motion to have refreshments, which was seconded by Mr. Meikel (as usual). Then everybody was happy, and adjourned to the dining room where pie of all kinds in plenty and coffee were served, also popcorn. After refreshments were served games were renewed until the new year 1909 was usherecl in and after singing “America" and wishing each other a happy and prosperous New Year all went home hoping to meet again next New Year’s eve.

State Law in Regard to the Convening: of the Legislature ami the Inauguration of the Governor.
There has been considerable discussion recently as to how long after the legislature convenes Governor Hanly will serve as governor and Hugh Th. Miller as lieutenant governor. It has been announced that the legislature will convene January 7, and that Thomas R. Marshall will be inaugurated as governor and Frank J. Hall as lieutenant governor on January 11. Thus during four days of the session Hugh Th. Miller will preside in the Senate as lieutenant governor. Some have looked on this as a trick of the Republicans to allow Mr. Miller to appoint the committees in the Senate. As a matter of fact, the constitution of the state specifically provides when the legislature shall convene and when the official terms of the governor and the lieutenant governor shall begin. The constitution provides that the legislature shall convene on the first Thursday after the first Monday in January every two years.

A Most Valuable Agent. The glycerine employed in Dr. Pierce’s medicines greatly enhances the medicinal properties which it extracts from native medicinal roots and holds in solution much better than alcohol would. It also possesses medicinal properties of its own, being a valuable demulcent, nutritive, antiseptic and antiferment. It adds greatly to the efficacy of the Black Cherrybark, Bloodroot, Golden Seal root.
