Uncle Wiggily

tCopyrl&ht, 1922. by McCIuro Newspaper Syndicate.) When Nurse Jane Fuzzy "Wuzzy

"What Is the matter, Nur?e Jane? eskfd Uncle Wipsily. "You l n't look verj' happy. If you have r. headache nnd can't set my breakt".'t I cm iret It rnylf." "Uli. "I'm polns to hop alonj and look for an adventure nr. 1 when I find It I'll order you a r.'- bed. I ll se If they havo one f it i?p.'t made of pine needles. For thrush th.it kind of a bed Is very fool when it Is new, when the i -"dies from the pine tree becomes ( : !. s:'.ff and broken they 5.!ck you." ' Indeed, they do!" lauched Nurse Jsr.e. "Hut don't trouble "ourself too much. Wipriiy. I dire fjy my o'. 1 lri wi'.l do for another week." "No. you musl have a new, roft -l m f-o: as possible!" declared the Vunr.y. "I'll see about it." ' Wv:i, uh'.'.e 3"ou are out adventurir.?. pir..e take the bread knife nr. 1 havo !t sharpened." Faid Nurse Jar.e. It ii o dull it will hardly cut warm butter." Uncle Vipglly took the bread knife with him, wrapping it up In a piece cf birch bark er the point woV.d.Vt stick him. Over the flelda and through tho woods hopped thj bunny rabbit, until he came to a s ft Kreen. mossy lop In the woods. ' I'm to .V.eepy," said th bunny to himself, "that I think I'll He down here and take a nap. "When I wake up I'll Ret the knife sharpened and lock for an adventure. Then III order a new bed for Nurse Jane." While Uncle "Wlfrtf !y was asleep on tho peft, xreen mossy log-, aion came the Wcoz! Wolf with a ba over his shoulder. The Wolf was c-n his way to se If he couldn't catch Charlie or Arabella Chick in the bag, when, all at cr.ee. the bad chap kxw the rabbit asleep. "Here's Uncle Wifrtfly!" chuckled the Wolf. "He il be better than Charlie or Arabella! 111 take him to my den!" And oftly that he didn't .waken the, rabbit, the Wolf popped 7nr.r Une Wiggily into the Ms. dur.g it over hi shoulder and started cfT over the hills to his den. After a while Uncle Wljrsily wakened tn&Me the bag which the "Wolf carried over hi? s.houlder. At flrrt the bunny did not know what had happened to him. Then he felt the Jcur.cir.gr motion ar.d he fa' that he was Inside a lag. "I'm caught!" whispered the bunr.y to himself. "The Wolf, the Fox f'r the Jklllery h'callory Alligator has m.- In a Lac! Oii. what shall I do? llor can I ret out?" Then Ur.cle Wiggily felt in his

pocket and his pawa touched the bread knife Nurse Jane had given

him to have sharpened. Takinr the;

knife from Itt wrapping of birch bark, Ur.cle Wiffffily felt of the edffe. "It's pretty dull." thousht the rabbit uncle, "but I think I can make It cut a hole in this basr. Then I can rirop out." Working gently, bo the Wolf wouldn't know what was going on. Undo Wiggily cut and Jabbed until he had a hole partly through the bag. Tho rabbit then had another thought. "If I happen to drop out when the Wolf Is going over a rough, stony place I'll fall on the atones and get hurt," said Mr. Longears to himself. "What had I better do?" He found that he could look down through the holo he had partly cut In the bottom of the bag. He could seo the ground and, Just as he feared, the Wolf was, at that moment, going over a rugh, tony place. "I must wait a whilV whispered the bunny. He kept on looking through the hole in the bag until he paw that the ground was green. "I must be over a bed of soft moss now," thought Uncle Wiggily. "Here I go!" With that he slashed the hole in the bag a little bigger, and out he dropped right on a soft thick bed of gree-n moss In the woods, so he wasn't in the least hurt. And he few so eoftly that the Wolf never heard him. So tho bad chap wen on. carrying: the empty ba. "But Uncle Wiggily is getting lighter and lighter, or else I am getting stronger and stronger," thought the Wolf, as he noticed how little the bag over his shoulder now weighed. "I guess I'm getting stronger," thought the Wolf. "Ha! Ha! I'm safely out of the bag!" laughed Uncle Wiggily as he rolled over and over on the slit green moss. And then he had a new Idea. "This mo would make Nurse Jane a lovely soft bed!" said the bunny. "Ill cut ror.'e ond take It home to her. It will be a better bed than I can buy at the store." Fo with the bread knife, dull as It was. the bunny cut enough moss to stuff a mattress. Ho piled It up and then went on to havo the knife sharpened. He borrowed a wheelbarrow of the , knife sharpener monkey and piled the wheelbarrow full of moss, wheeling it home to his muskrat lady housekeeper. "Oh, what a lovely moss bed!" cried Nurse Jane. "Glad you like it!" chuckled the bunny. "I had a lovely adventure, too," and ho told of cutting his way out of the Wolfs bag. And oh. my goodness! How angry that Wolf was when he got to his den with the empty bag. And If the stove poker doesn't tickle the coal scuttle and make it spill ashes on the dusting brush. I'll tell you next about Uncle Wiggily and the Juniper berries.

James Coffroth is to Offer Record-Breaking Purses for Thoroughbreds. L.OS ANGELES, Cal., Oct. 11. That Pres't Jamea Wood Coffroth of the Tla Juana Jockey club and well-known sportsman, who recently offered Champion Jack Dcmpsey 1, 000.000 for three fights to be ßtaged under his direction, believe. In liberally rewarding merit is disclosed by a list Just received here which shows fabulous sums of be distributed during the coming; race season at the Tla Juana. Mexico, course. The list of monev for the eicht

stakes, reaching here from, Trcs'tJ

Coffroth, now In New York, Is somewhat staggering and it compares favorably with the stupendous Eurtifl offered at the biggest tracks of America. One stake $30,000 for the Coffroth Handicap at lVi miles, Is the richest ever given for horses of all ages. It far exceeds any purse ever before offered In Winter racing and th' . acclaims the Mexican course, with Its salubrious climate the real capital of thoroughbred racing when snow and lco spread over the tracks of less fortunate sections. Tho Tia Juana track opens November 20 for 100 days or more. This season all nomination and starting; fees, In pome instances as high as J1E0 for a horse, will be additional money for the horsemen, for the jockey club will not retain any of this, as has been the custom in the six previous years at the Mexican track. Thus the Coffroth Handicap, at 1 U miles, will have a total value, of almost $C3.000, for'it is assured there will be a great rush to nominate for thi rich classic. The two-year-old division has been well taken care of, for there will be three stakes for the youngsters. These are the Tia Juana Futurity at W2 furlongs, with 53,000 added; the Debutante Stakes, furlong.V $2.500 added, and the Juvenile Stakes, H mJle, with JZ.SOO more. The other stakes not mentioned are aj follows: Tla Juana Cup. two miles, for horses of all ages. $6,000. Tia Juana Derby, mile. for three-year-old?. $6.000. T'.a Juana Claiming Stakes. 1 mile and 70 yard, for nil ages. $2.500. Speed Handicap, 5U furlongs, for ell ages. $2.500.
