AT HIS SIDE? When St-r. it or James A. "Watson opened the republican campaign in this state on Saturday night, ha might almost be suspected of taking a cruel advantnge of the senatorial nominee by the character cf his speech. "I want Albert J. Beveridgo at my side In the United States senate" was the fervent appeal of the Old Guard whip, the spokesman for every prlvllisffd bit of legislation, the one sure rupport of evry high finance eherne which !s forced by the administration. The one sure bet that Senator "Watson can make is that ro matter how the voters cast their ballot3 this fall, he will be disappointed if he Is sincere In his wi.h to have Mr. Ivfrid?o at hi side. Mr. Watson Is one of the defenders of Newberry. He stood coldly and unflinchingly ag-ainst the Good cn?elcr.ee of the state and corralled tho votes that permitted tho man who flooded Michigan with rr.or.ey, to secitro his senate Feat. Certe.lniy no voter of Indiana and no republican who remembers tho receni rrlmary will Imagine that "Watson wants, Mr. Peveridge In the eenate when he Newberry tanJal L revived. n It will be revived, after next March 4. Any plea to elect Mr. Beverldpa on & plea, that t o Is needed to support this present administration will fall- It w a. upon the fact that he differed wl.lely and Hrgly from the administration on principles and on intention? and purposes that the ma'crity of republicans selected him as their candidate. AUTOS ASD BOOZE

You h'.tr much th.e-e diys of the auto being the f.ret aid to the bootl'-crr and th greatest obstacle to the enforcement of liw. Drivers In highpowered ears are able to load them with Illicit drinks, dart across the borders or from the, eti'.'.s hidden away in fir places and deliver the!r rarfOfs at will. It remain:-, however, for Chief of Tcliee Iirry I-ar.e, net ciiginal'.y a prohibitionist, to point to the fart that the manufacture and sale of tach auto

mobile adds a new raison for the era of prohibition and make more impe;bl for ther ever to b" a return of aicohoiio lrir.k.. "There are enough automobile.? now in use to put the entire population of the country nn wheels at once and the same time" is hi deduction from the satlsrics. which show thre are fomethlng over twelve millions of autos nr.d several millions of tjucks now in ue In this country. His figures are undoubtedly correct, if you consider the pe.-jhilitie.s of loading the.e machines to the limit of the ordinary Joy riding party. That means something to a man with a practical turn of mind who has imagination enough to the entire population aboard tho rars. It means, ta his mind, the possibilities of accidents, for he U Interestej in tratTic and drunken drivers and accidents are almost lnsparabl-, especially In thick trafTiC In the old dajfl, if -ome citizen stopped too long at "The I-ast Chance," h could snooze away In his buggy or wagon and be fairly sure that the Instinct cf his horse would take 1dm home or at least protect him from collisions. Automobile driving requires a clear head and a ouick acting brain. An eyo clouded by aleohol and a hand pal-led by poison is In trouble w-hen behind the wheel of a high powered car. The wrecks, when It la tried, are testimony to the fact that the accidents to drunken drivers are pretty close to the hundred per cent mark and that booze driven auto aro meances tc? everyone else on the street or road. You have only to Imagine the condition that would exist In this city with its thousands of autos under conditions which existed In the- old days of the saloon.- Men who tried to drive machines In the conditions under which they formerly let their hordes guide them would in all probability strew the etreets with wrecked cars and the police force would be busily engaged In carrying tho victims to hospitals and in clearing the streets of the debris. Chief Lme, by his analysis. Is more than convincing. No citizen who has any regard for his life, be he the driver of a car or a pedestrian, wowuld welcome the return of drunkenness that prevailed with the open saloon or the ca.y purchase of liquor. He ia more than correct in listing the auto manufacturers of the nation as the most powerful force for the preservation of prohibition. A nation on wheels must be a sober nation. A nrunken driver Is more deadly than a gunman and the nation is riding today, no: drinking. o SEW AIR RECORD A new record for speed in travel was established Saturday when Ber. Acosta went at a rate of 213 miles an hour. He traveled by air, of course, usinff a new machine which will be one of many which will endeavor to shatter records at the big gathering in Detroit two weeks hence. When Jules Verne wrote his novel entitled "Around the "World In Eighty Days," It was read by boys, men now and not very old men as nes go, because of Its appeal to the Imagination. Those same boys debated with their fathers as to whether such a thing was possible and were told that of course It wai all Imagination and that no one could possibly cover the globe in so short .a pace of time. It is hardly a quarter tf a. century since a woman, to show the development of transportation, did circle the globe In less than that time and wrote her mtme into the list of famous people. The speed at which Bert Acosta Hew would have taken hira around the earth at the equator in lesi :nan five days. Of course, the machine cannot be kept running continuously, but the day is nt hand when to cross ihis continent in 24 hours will be no uncommon experience The mails, very shortly will cover the distance In 27 hours. The Atlantic has already 'been crossed by fliers aid the Improvements now being made In machines will soon make them available for regular trips. Around the world in a week will be an actuality within a decade. Just as surely as the fanciful etory of Verne became ridiculous because of Its absurd fc'.owness befor the generation for which It was written had passed. The airplane Is going through the stages passed b other Inventions. It is now In that era of de- , velopment which the auto had reached when Barney Oldfield gained fame as a dare devil by driving a mile a minute. It is probable that many South Bend drivers, not dire devils, hit that pace Sunday when they found tnetr machines upon a level bit of road with no otstACles ahead. From the racing drivers of auto sports came the better roads and the perfection of the machine for common usage. The new record of Acosta means that many minds will turn to the problem of building flying machines which can he safely driven at the same rate of speed, simple enough for the untrained to guide and fly. The one essential for flying is a landing field and air port. This city Is exceptionally well placed to secure a government field and the naming of a committee of cltizen3 who learned aviation during the war days by Mayor Scebirt is an excellent step In the right directior. Watch those epeed records !i the air. They mean nmethlr.5 in your life. Very soon your letters will come that way and a little later you will probably be guiding a flivver of your own up among the c'ouds. quite as safely and much more speedily than you now run your auto over the pavements. o Society to exterminate cats is started. It could be done by teaching dogs to climb trees. , o It comes to him who waits; but den't be a dumb waiter.

Tin: r ai.l or ivwdit (Syracuse Post-Standard) Forty years of brigandage which pales many of the wildest tales of tlction have ended with the surrender to Spanish troops of Italsuli, considered the greatest robber In Morocco. For months he and a band of followers have been In constant fliyht before the troop who last July drove them out of his stronghold in the citadel of Daeroot, near Tangier. I'nder the relentless pursuit he has been forced to give up. The career of Mulai Ahmed Itaisuli fparkles with adventure and villainy. His name ha been a terror for years and his operations perhaps the boldest known In modern history. The I'nited States will remember him best for his kidniping. In 1304, of Isn II. Perdicar.'s. an American citizen, and his son-in-law, Crowell Varley, a British subject. To enforce the demand for Perdlcaris release, the American government sent warship to Tangier. Then the fultan of Morocco, fearing the power of the United States more than he feared Iiai.ull and that fear was great paid the ransom, ending- a situation that had created more than ordinary excitement here and abroad. It is a vivid career that hs been closed with his capture, on that would make exceptionally interesting reading could it be reduced to type.

Did you ever stop to consider how many accidents are caused on :ailroad trains through negligence on the part of the inspectors who inspect the rails over which they pass? It is very evident that it would be impossible for a train to reach its destination in safety, if the rails over which it passed were broken. HUMAN LIVES ARE PRECIOUS but think now many people eventually descend into premature graves by suiTcring needless pain th rough this same culpable negligence.
