Runne rs fen .Smugglers. In Havana, according to the reports hundreds of aliens throng Central park in the afternoon and at night and constantly a dozen or so men, operate among them, going from group to group. These men, it is explained are "runners" for the smuggling ' king?." There is no employment in Cuba for thousands of the (aiim-e and European aliens now there, it H reported, yet since the present passport and amendeel immlgratirin restrictive act became operative in this country" last May at least 7,000 aliens are said to have arrived in Havana with the ultimate hope of saining entram-e surreptitiiouly into
Cnite-d States. There are at
pre.-ent. u is estimated approximately IM'O Chinese alone in Cuba for whom there is no employment. In fact the report avers, the Orientals will not ac cept work under any circumstaiu a-esj except to earn sutlicient with which to pay passage to this country er Mexico. The usual fee charged for smuggling aliens, it is learned, ranges frota $."'jti to $1,00') for each Chinese and about $1"0 for a european alien.
