French Inventor Soon to Try Out Human Bird Suit

Frenchman Believes Garment With Wings Will Enahle Persons to Fly. RV FRANK F. 31 A SOX, I nte-mat tenia 1 News Si'rice Staff CerrtiMiilent. PARIS, Aug. 13. Practical tests of the human bird suit. Invented by Dr Magnan, will be made at Dieppe in a few weeks. The apparatus which Dr. Magnan ha constructed tc attach to the human body weighs less than 150 pounds. It consists of two wings less than a yrd long and a fuselage and tail. "For years. I have been observing birds and their flight." explain the inventor. "I have discovered nothing. I have simply observed and noted my observations. It is possible that I have made mistakes In my deductions." Dr. Magnan describes the results of his years of work to the editor of the sporting newspaper L'Auto. "In the first place gliding flight and sailing flight are too often confused. Gilding signifies to take, advantage of an angle of foil: sailing means to depart from a given point and, profiting by the wind, to reach a height superior to that of the Mart. Observers Sewrulls. "I have observed thousands of seagulls. These birds bake off from a high point, get a good start on the fall and then turn their

faces into the wind. They shorten the length of their

Let me add that the birds have wings which are very supple; I almost said soft. The delicacy of the wings warns the bird of the changing currents of air. The device I have arranged for my human bird to take th-? place of thN .characteristic of b:rds wings is an anemometer siren which whistles with the changing of the posuro of the wind waves and advises the man bird when he should glide and when he should sail." M. Magnan intends to do the flret experimenting himself, but has ecuVed the cervices of a famous French aviator who hos himself done much research work In the lield of volplaning. If the first tryouts at Dieppe promise success Dr. Magnan will continue the experimenting at Calais.
