Approximately 1,500 serious boiler accidents occur in the United States every year, of which about 4 00 are violent explosions, cays William V. Griffer, chief boiler inspector of the Ftatei industrial board. More than 500 persons are killed ln these accidents, about 800 person., are injured, and approximately $1,000,000 worth of property 1 destroyed, he said. Within a ehort time, Mr. Griffer said, a committee consisting of two boiler manufacturers, two representatives of boiler insurance companies, two plant engineers, a representative cf Purdue university, and the state boiler inspector will begin work on a new boiler law for tho state. The present law, Jt was said. Is in many ways inadequate to regulate the Increased use of boilers. Twenty-nine states now have boiler laws, Mir. Griffer said. Indiana has had a boiler inspection law since 1911. Losses on boiler failures ln the state last year, it was -aid, cct a total of $111,000, and caused the death of three persons and the Injury of seven. With approximately 27.000 boilers In use ln the state, the loss of life and properly laßt year is regarded as remarkably low. and is explained by uic ii:-i'ci nun M-rvi.' proviueu ny i the state industrial board and by the nine Insurance companies derating in thi.s field ! the state.
