While the old -eata"b!i shed Jnstitu-1 tlon.s of South Rend are steadily increasing their aize and facilities the c.ty has an infant Institution which Is aiso rapidly expanding. Th;a is the local radio broadcasting station. WBAQ, which was established somewhat more than a month ag. and which Is the pioneer in this vicinity in organized wireless broadcasting. Station WBAQ. which Is located on the third floor of the T. IC C. A.. nds out news bulletins furnished by the News-Times at 5:30 and 9 o'clock each evening except Sunday. At the 9 o'clock call special programs of musical numbers and other features are broadcasted. Many of the leading musicians of South Bend and other cities have jartlr: pa tS I In the programs. The station also co-operates with the local police department In sending out Information concerning stolen cars, missing individuals and similar matters. n Sunday afternoon special Sabbath services are transmitted. Myron L. Harmon, director of th station, and ThftJM H. Mains, operator, recently conYpleted installing new equipment which has increased the power of the station about five fold and its efficiency three fold The effective radius of the sending apparatus has now been increased from about 100 miles to 300 miles or more. However, the local station is occasionally heard by powerful rt reiving sets at much greater distances, the farthest station to iate that has repoited hearing South Bend being Plainfleld. X. J. th- widening of I.aSa'.le av from th- bridge to EJaCOla way W. A resolution for this work, widening the avenue 1 fe t. for three blocks, has already been ordered One of the largest public works improvements presently onsidered by the hoard is the re-surfacing of Xotre Iarne blvd . from Jefferson blvd. north to the city limits In this connection, there is being taken up the question of straightening the corner at Sorin St. At this point the avenue has a decided jog. and before preparing specif ic aions for the new paving, the elimination of this jog ! contemplated. Ooadcmit Corner Nearest corners will probablj be purchased y the city and the thoroughfares widened to permit of a graduating curve at this" point. Two lots will be taken over by condemna

tion proceedings before this work can commence. In the southwestern part of the city. Identical situations occur and city officials have taken them under consideration. Chapin st. and Catalpa aw, parallel streets, where

they intersect Bruce st. in Kemble ! addition, jog some little distances

The purpose Is to widen the two streets and eliminate the sharp corners. Recommendations on these proposals have already gone forward to the City Planning commission. The most pertinent consideration has of late been given to the widening of SamplA st., especially since the announcement of the Studebaker corporation to expand Its present manufacturing facilities. This street, which separates Plant Xo. 1 and No. 2 of the local automobile Industry Is the only through street extending between Lincoln way E. and the west part of the city. It is one of the principal east and west thoroughfares, heavily travelled hut recognized as entirely too narrow.

Future, expansion must give serious

attention to this question. c. p. c to OMMttor, Obtaining some north and south connection with Washington and IaSalle avs., near 'hapin st., as well as between Short Navarre place, and Marion st., and other small straightening proposals of streets and avenues in the near northwestern section of the city are often brought to the Public Works board's attention for remedy. The City Planning commission will be prevailed upon to consider these improvements for convenience of the traveling public despite the cost of condemnation. Recently the city opened up Calvert st. where at Michigan there was a "dead end." This permitted the opening of a long through thoroughfare on the south side. Straightening of Walnut st., at Washington av., is also proposed to permit of a straight-away north and south thoroughfares in the western section of the city. The City Planning commission recognizes the value of Mr. Bartholomew's contention that main traffic streets should be designated about every six blocks apart. This situation Is directed expressly to the south side and particularly Sample st., which, so far as distribution of population is concerned, is very near the city's center. Street a Traffic Tangle.

On the aouth side, Indiana, lng and Donmoyer avs.. are

streets designated as principal traffic streets. Between Indiana av. and the New York Central railroad tracks, there Is no through street with the exception of Sample st. This street Is potential as a trafflo carrier Is widened to a minimum width of 40 feet from curb to curb. Even a greater width is recommended, as a 4 or 50-foot street will be demanded in years to come. At the present time, talk Is heard of the Intention of street railway extension on this thoroughfare If such a movement for Its widening could be carried through. With car service on this street, a broader thoroughfare would be needed for the accommodation of vehicle traffic. Operation of street cars on Sample etreet cars would permit connections at Lincoln way E. and Mishawaka av. with South and North side car. At It's western terminal cars would connect with the Bralrie nv. and Sample st. lines and the city line going north The bulk of factory employers of both Studehaker and Oliver plants who live southeast and In Mishawaka would be given much better service to and from their homes. Prairie av . ard W. Samp!e St.. are two principal arteries of traffic from outside the city. No connection Is afforded with Lincoln way E.. and

j Mlwhawaka aw. except upon this narj row street or a zig-zag course i through town. Talk of widening Sample st. has j heen a subject of discussion for the past 20 years. ?ome time previous

to the war a movement was put under way and but for a few remonstrance? arains the proposal would have carried. With the City Planning commission installed and in operation, the Sample st. widening project Is expected to take definite form.

STUDEBAKER PLACE HOMES

OHE industrial expansion in South Bend leaves no M room for doubt as to the desirability and advisability of investing in a home. The constant growth of the population assures the future welfare of the city and the soundness of such an investment. The South Side is recognized as one of the city's choicest residential districts, as is testified by the proposed traction extension and by the city improvements, either proposed or actually under construction. Improvements to Ewing Avenue, east of Miami Street, are under way, which, when completed, will make Ewing Avenue the most beautiful of the outer boulevards. 1 Studebaker Place fronts on Ewing Avenue and is in the center of the natural expansion of the South Side. The homes, locality, and terms offered challenge comparison with others anywhere, and all improvements are in and paid for. Renting is as difficult as it is unwise. Home owning is as simple as it is advantageous. Twenty-three building permits were issued in one day. Let us show you how to avoid the trouble and months of delay which building necessitates, with a home in Studebaker Place which will meet your most exacting demands.
