John Kolakls, MIshawaka restaurant proprietor, whose body was found on tho banks of St. Joseph river Monday night. Kolakls Is believed to havo been a victim of foul play. Officers advance the theory that a woman played a prominent part in luring him to his death by taking; him to Eiagle Point, several months ago, and at which time he disappeared. The woman fled this vicinity Tuesday morning, it was said. Arrests Momentarily Expected in Mystery Murder of Local Merchant Police Confident of Apprehending Slayer of John Kolakis Place Credence in Theory That Woman Had Important Part in Slaying Prohe Several Clues.
With arrests momentarily expect ed, the Mishawaka police are con fident that they will be able to clear up the mystery surrounding the murder of John Kolakls, local Greek merchant, whose body was found Monday afternoon on the bank of the St. Joseph river about three miles east of this city. In addition to the investigation being conducted by the local police, the crime is being investigated by the sheriff's office, with Deputy Sheriff Orra Taylor conducting the investigation. The important development of the day waa the credence officials place in the theory that a woman had an important part in the murder of Kolakis, and this angle, together with several other angles are being thoroughly investigated. The theory of the murder that is generally accepted is that Kolakls j met his death, not at the hands of a party of holdup men, but rather j at the hands of parties who not only j were acquainted with Kolakis. but j who knew also that their victim was In the habit of caj-rylnsr largre jninis J of money on his person. It is point-1 ed out that if he had been waylaid by highwaymen whose only motive wm robbery, they would have taken no pains to make away with the body, such as vero taken by the mu rderers. Two Theories. As to the actual commission ol the crime there are two theoriesone that Kolakls may have been lured to the outskirts of Mishawaka, possible to the place near which his body waa found, and then shot, his money taken from him, and thei body pushed to the bank of the river. The other theory Is that he was murdered, probably in Mishawaka. and after nightfall the body va3 taken and thrown Into the river, either near the point where it was found Monday or from the County Line bridge about two miles east of the place where the body was recovered. In the reconstruction of the events rt t b c crimp tha KPPnml thpnrv nresents more dltflcultlea than the first, It would he quite possible for the murderers to have taken the body to the place where it was found, with out much fear of det'tion. as there ; is a road, little travelled in winter time, branchin? off the Lincoln highway leading to Eagle Point, and it would be a matter of little ditticulty for two or more men to carry the body from that road to the river bank. However, if this H actually what happened. It i difficult to account for the fact that the body wai not washed away during; the re-cent high water In the river On the other hand, if the body
was thrown into the river from the seer. Further. according to the county line bridge, it is difficult to j -icr? emanating from Mishawaka, account for i: being washed ashore !
