This photograph was taken from the roof of the Hearst Building, three blocks from the northern edge of the big fire. It shows the Austin Building a mass of flames, and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy sixteen-story building burning from the roof downward. The spectacular blaze, Chicago's worst sine the disaster of 1871, drew 100,000 spectators, who jammed' outside the fire lines. The glow drew people from miles around.
