"Ju.t think what you have done for me this afternoon! How can I ever thank you?" S)i- had no word nor 'look for Lillian, to whose kindly thought alone she owed her good fortune. I confirmed my surmise that a woman to her was a neplipible quantity when th:ro was a man to impress. I do not understand how Robert Savarin. without absolute discourtesy, manaped to avoid taklnp her outstretched hands, but he did it, and turned sliphtly toward Lillian. "That's Lil's SpvHnlty." "You owe no thanks to me, Mrs. Kund!e." he said gravely. "Whatever small assistance I may have been to you was proffered solely upon Mrs. Underwood's account. Any pratltude you may feel i her due. not mine." Hi. tone had a finality that I think penetrated even the thick coatinp of self-conceit which was 'Eleanor Rundlc's. I saw her bite j her lips savagely, then she achieved ! a lisht little laugh. "Oh. that's Lil's specialty!" she said carelessly. "The trick of evoklnp pratltude along her trail. And, of course, old girl. I am tremendously obliged and all that. Do come to see me, all of you," she included me with a half-contemptuous flicker of hr eyelids. One day. as Uncle Wiggliy was hopping along under the trees not far from his hollow stump bungalow, a splash of fomething wet fell on the pink, twinkling nose of the rabbit gentleman. "Pear me!" exclaimed the bunny, "The April showers are beginning rather early this year in March! I haven't my umbrella!" The wet drop ran down into the bunny's mouth, and he had a taste of something pweet on his tongue. "That's funny!" he said. "Sugary j ram. xometning new. Rut as he stepped out from re-T-cath the tree no drops fell on him, and he began to think better of going back to hi hollow stump bunga!ow to get his umbrella. perhaps this sweet rain doesn't fall all over." thought Mr. Longears. He stepped beneath the tree again, and once more, some sweet drops fell on him. Then, as he looked up- he saw what was happening. ProTn the b.-oken end of a tree branch some drops were dripping and, catching one In his paw, Uncle Wiggliy tasted it. Man'e sugar!" he exclaimed in j delight. ADELE GARRISON She blew us a kis3 as she turned and walked swiftly back to the door of the art gallery. Robert Savarin proffered his hand to Lillian to help her Into the car. "That saffron chap on the front ftep3 unconscious'.' pave me the or.y possible comment upon this performance." He said "Pearls before swine, your aid to her is." and then in a whisper which carried ' farther than he knew, I heard him add : "Dear heart, you must not ppend yourself so for others." Utterly Kxliautotl. I saw her face brighten at the whispered words, and I was as p'.ad at the sight as I could be for the Indignation which was mine apainst the rudeness, the callous taking for granted of Ionian's compassion, which Mr. Rundle had exhibited. And I knew that even though Robert Savarln's artistic instincts could not regret the recognition he had obtained for Eleanor Rundle's work, yet he bitterly resented her cavalier behavior to the woman he adored. That the incident had cast a shadow over our .little trip I saw only too clearly, so. I cast about for something which would divert them. Remembering a banal, oft-quoted sentence, I drawled it nasally. "WeH. the more I see of Art. the better I love Nachoor!" I tr4d to give it the appropriate pronunciation, and was rewarded by a chuckle from Robert Savarin, a swift smile from Lillian. "Ain't Nachoor wonderful, anyway?" she countered In her own inimitable drawl, and then we all lauphed heartily, as people under a strain invariably do at the silliest things ,and I knew that the tension had lessened, and that Mrs. Rundle had been relegated to her proper negligible place in Lillian's memories. We drove on through the beauty that is the Hudson river valley to historic Palenville, inquiring the way to the foot of the mountain at which we expected to meet Dicky. Bess Dean and one of the twin Cosgrove boys. Fut we were evidently too early, for there was no sign of them when we drew up at the beginning of the road winding up the mountain. Robert Savarin turned off the switch, and for 10 minutes; we sat quitely enjoying contrast be-' twren the tranquil cultivated fields ; cf the country around us and the : glimpse of wild, almost primeval undergrowth the mountain road afforded. ' And then we uttered a simultaneous exclamation of apprehension and dismay, for around a curve in the mountain road there suddenly appeared two men, Dicky and Ted Co.f?rove, supporting between them, almost carrying, a tottering, swaying, apparently exhausted woman, whom I had hard work to recognize as Bess Dean. low, and soon he was bottling the sap to make it thick and eticky, after which it would cool and be turned into maple sugar, hard and glittering. As the sap boiled, filling' the air with a most delicious smell, many of the animal boys and girls clustered around in the spring show. "Could we have some maple sugar. Uncle Wiggliy" they inquired. "How long before it will be ready?" asked Kittle Kat. "A good while." said Nurse Jan1. "liu. while they're waiting I could make them a little maple wax." said Undo Wiggliy. "IT dip out some of the boiling sap. that Isn't quite rooked. I'll spread it thin on some patches of clean snow, and when it "N-ols the maple wax will be ,ready to eat. Rut you mus-. not chew it or bite on it -only snick it after it's in your mouths, far it Is so sticky it will clamp your jaws shut, and If you tiy to open them all your teeth will be pulled out!" "Oh-oo-oo-oo!" cried the animal children. "We won't chew it!" So Uncle Wiggliy made some maple wax on the snow, and when it was cool he pave little balls of it to each animal bov or girl. And when
