Can South Bend Eat 30 Acres of Celery in 1922?

South Bend procers maintain ?he can. anci that the 25 to 30 acres of this preferred table delicacy which is predicted for Pleasant Valley on the SteenburR Farms will hardly meet the usual requirements of this city alone. As to the -40 to 50 acres of truck gardens which are also assured for the coming pummer. South Bend citizens will go through them like the proverbial bull in the like proverbial china closet, to use the vernacular of Main Street. Small need for the transportation facilities afforded St. Joseph County's new productive institution two and one-half miles southwest of South Bend s limits, so far as 1922 is concerned. The coming season's crops from all those rapidly materializing truck farms are needed right here at home, without even going into Mishawaka. Purchasers of the conveniently located truck garden tracts in Pleasant Valley arc enthusiastic for the coming of Spring. Grocers, wholesale and retail, and produce men are watching with interest the development of that rich muck soil which is St. Joseph County's by grace; of the headwaters of the Kankakee. Bankers too have an interest in these farms, because this new institution mean the retention here of thousands and thousands of dollars which in the past has been expended elsewhere. Pleasant Valley is a fact. Thr governmental experiments which proved the worth of St. Joseph County's "pay dirt" have not been in vain. An eager market awaits the entire production of Pleasant Valley on Steenburg Farms.
