day. a half pint of rich milk. In Fourteen Schools. Ono ton, 2S2 pound3 is the-amount gained to date, 79 4 pounds of which were, gained during the month of January'. Fourteen of th- city schools, including the Mues.el, Colfax, Coquillard, Elder, Franklin, Lafayette, Lincoln. Madis-on, Fcrley, Siudebaker, Division st. portable and Laurel, now have the so-called "milk classes." Some of the classes were started in October, 1921, pome in November and December, while others were begun only three weeks a?o. There are now 76 8 children who are given milk to drink during recess every school day. All the children of the grade fchnols are examined rrgularly by

morrow. " iro sonny reports with the rest of the "gang." gets hL bottle of pasteurized and a straw, and imbibes blissfully for the next three minutes. P.oy scouts, older 6tudents, and the teachers prevent calamities by helping the email children open their bottles and get started. Parents of pucils in the milk classes pay for the milk if they are able and willing to do so. Otherwise, the Anti-tuberculosis league stands the cost. This results, usually, in about one-fourth of the milk being paid for by the league. Approximately $30 is alio spent each semester for straws which number 100,OOO. Teach Health Habits. "We would like to give milk twice a day to all these, and to more as well." said an instructor, "but ve

have almost more than they can do

now." "We don't try only to build up underweight children," said Miss Lulu Kline, head of the school nurses. "We teach the practicing of health habits dn general. "Many people are net in sympathy with our work because they think that nothing can be done with a half a pint of milk a day. You can do a great deal with only that small amount of milk. It's nothing less than a blessing. to some of these little underfed children. So I think the milk alone is worth while. "Education of the parents, however, has a great deal to do with the well being of the child. The school nurses visit the homes whenever it is deemed advisable, and Investigate conditions there. Sometimes things are found Jn a deplorable state, and then we do whatever we can to remedy matters. We give the mothers explicit instructions as to the care of her children, and we help here In every way possible. "Fresh air, healthful exercise, plenty of sleep, and bodily cleanliness have as much to do with the normal development of a child as the amount of food he consumes, and we try to see that the children have a fn1r chanc at these."

Lad Gains Five Pound. The reports made by the school nurses c-f.ch month indicate that their efforts are accomplishing 5omo

good. Of the 76 S who were given milk, 601; made substantial gains during th? month of January. Most of the rest remained the same weight, while a small number lost. One nine-year-oid boy gained five pounds. Whether all the five pounds is due to milk cannot be ascertained, but without doubt it helped materially. It is extremely interesting to see a milk clas take its daily portion. Groups ranging from 30 to 125, the present high record at the Oliver school, In a variety of sizes and types, appear promptly at 10 o'clock for their liquid luncheon. 1 Many cf them seem to take the task quite seriously, and solemnly devote their attention to the matter of absorbing the prescribed onehalf pint. Others look, upon the rite as a humorous idea of the nurses, and take swallows between giggles. With the milk once stowed away they scamper off for recesswith a satisfied feeling, along wlih the . half pint, in their stomachs. "To your health and mine" Is really tho daily toast of the milk classes. Two tons gain in the near future is their motto. j
