Irrigation Ditch Running Through the Farms Years ago, what is now Pleasant Valley, wos p.at of a large glacial lake, known as Lake Kankakee. As the lake was gradually drained by an outlet (now the Kankake" River) it left a deposit of the finest alluvial land in tins part of the country. The Steenburg Farms are situated in the center of the great water shed of the St. Lawrence and Mississippi Rivers the Kankakee runs directly through them. "I hi gives them ample irrigation even in the hottest and driest weather. The decaying of vegetable matter for centuries on tliU old lake bed, coupled with modern cultivation and drainage, has given to St. Joseph county 3000 acres o f tl richest and most productive black soil, which langes in depth from three to ten feet. Yields of the Steenburg Farms are fare greater than those of similar pieces of land and today these farms am attracting experienced truck farmers and the attention of the United States Agricultural Department, which has established an experimental station there. With the coming of these progressive truck gardeners, and by their endeavors. South Bend will soon enter an era of agricultural as well as industrial prosperity. Know the Steenburg Farms and what nature did for St. Joseph County. Number 34 Charles P. Gray Company Firfl National Bank Bldg. Chicago, Illinois South Bend Offices 218 N. Michigan St
