PI casing Mtisica I Program Given by M usicians 9 Club Fir.-t Concert of Series Delightfully Received Next Recital Feb. 6. i;v wiiii'iiKD .1. iiiii;v. It lias hern some time since SouthI'rnd has had the jirivilepe of listening to such an interesting and varied procr.'un as that presented, so artisticilly. by Josephine Decker, contralto; Mrs. Marjorie T'.ertPlinp Galloway, pianist; Mrs. Julia M. Rode, soprano; MIk.s "Wilda Shonts, vlolln-i-t; IMna Reed Cover, accompanist, and Maude Weber, accompanist, at the Hr.st concert of the Musicians' cuh rles. siven In the Rotary room is to le hoped that if the remainincr concerts are to be such treats, the Mj.Jciu.ns' club will not limit thf series to but three recitals. Miss Decker opened her program with two typical Ilrahins' songs, "Sapphic Ode" and "My L.ove It Is Green." These were genuine triumphs for ML-s Decker and were finiK with true artistry and understanding. Of her other numbers, mu h could be written about her presentation of Kramer's i"The Faltering Dusk." It was .a delightfully realistic, bit of singing:, done with a ffeiing which showed an insight into the theme. "The Japanese Death Song." a wierd thlnj? that leaves little to the imagination, was done exceptionally well. Ourran's "The Holiday," a light. . capricious song with an irresintibl appeal, was received with enthusiasm. Intrrvstlns Ilarn Program. Mrs. Galloway presented an unusually interesting piano program. hopin's "Scherzo in R Flat Minor" vas presented with almost perfect technique and a tone that rang with bell-like clarity. Mrs. Galloway's interpretations were Interesting and her modulations artistically done. The immortal "Minuet in G" by Reethoven, with its appealing meb ody and undeniabjo charm, showed beyond any pos.-dlde doubt, the ability of Mrs. Galloway. The group of three songs in French with which Mrs. Rode opened her program, were delightful gems of song which were well received. Mrs. Rode'.s undeniable personality together with a. s-oprano voice of beauty and wide range, make her a singer of unusual appeal. Rachmaninoff's "In the Silence of the Night" was the songgem of the evening; in fart. It was one of the most beautiful things j heard here in some time. "The Odalisque," by Carpenter, was an ini terestlng and subtle piece of des1 oriptiv song writing, well handled j by Mrs. Rode. lit fairly bespoke a seraglio. Hageman's mature ? Holiday'' gave Mrs. Rode's voice wide range and revealed a voic of power And sweetness In the higher registers. The three violin numbers offered by Mips ShontP showed her to be a musician with a true mastery of her instrument. Her technique, which s almost flaw les. does much to make up for what is lacking in the way of deep feeling and tru expression. All of the soloists were fortunate In having as accompanists such genuine artists as .Miss Cover and Mis.s Weber. It Is seldom that one finds two accompanists who read with M.ch feeling and interesf.
