Look at the crop in the picture and judge for yourself Onions do grow on the Steenburg Farms, in great abundance in 1920 one acre alone, without fertilization, produced 700 bushels, and the average yield is over 550 bushels to the acre. Why do they row so plentiful here? Because onions have to have soil that is easily cultivated and one that is naturally fertile, not subject to drought and yet well drained, either naturally or artificially. Tlie three thousand acres of rich, moist, well drained soil of the Steenburg Farms is the soil best adapted to the cultivation of the onion. The United States Agricultural Department knows the valut of these farms and for some time has had an experimental station there. The fertility and the closeness of the Steenburg Farms to the large local markets has attracted many experienced truck farmers keen, practical business men. Their efforts and the bountiful help of Mother Nature will mean that South Bend will be heralded not only as an industrial center but an agricultural center as well.
