BILLY EVANS Says Many of ths things that happen in Kimball aro Impo.vtfblo of explanation. On of th mo?t difficult th'nsj to explain in the a.s with which same pitchers defeat certain teama, yet a ilnst wrakor afc'Kfegations they aro very unsuccessful. This fact was forcibly brot'g-ht to my attention Inst spring. Ed Rommel of the Athletic was the pitcher' to play the leading role. I regard j Kd Bommel as a mighty fine pitcher. 1 He has the stuff and pitches intelligently. No club In tho American lengue boasted of more hitting strength than the New York Americans last K:ion. A pitcher UjIo to stop thb Yanks was usually forced to turn in a high grade of pitching. During the fir?t month of tho American league race, Rommel scored three, wins over the Yanka. He looked like the real pitcher ho is. in every game. Tho Yankees were Poing at top speel in the spring, making it a tough job for any pitcher to stop them. Now for the funny part of it. In tha first month Rommel made a number of starts against the other clubs in tho eastern wheel of tho American leauo circuit. Boston, Washington and Philadelphia aH hick the punch of the Yankees. During the first month of piay Rommel was finable to win a single game other than the three Pcoreet over the Yankees. Worse yet, ho ffiihd to get by tho flrt inning again: any other club he faced. Three Odd Happenings Gave Clyde Milan Chance to Become Manager of Washington Senators for 1922
Clyde Milan has been made manace.r of the V.a.hlnffton team of the American Iag"ue. A year a?o at thlt time Clyde Mi' an had no thought of ever nanazlr.e a major leaeruc ball club. He admits that himself. Georce DcBride wa manager of tho Washington team la-ct year. He was doln? A very eool Job of It. Ono day, while battine prounders to the lnfilders, he was struck ovr the eye by a thrown ball from the outfield. The Injury forced McBride out of the came for two weeks. It was neccfc.Try that the. club have a temporary leader. Clyde Milan and Walter Johnson Aro the two veterans of the tam. Walter had no dir'j to manape, the Job fell to Clyd. Was Milan successful as a temporary manager? He certainly was. Under hU direction the club won 11 ftralpht ball frames, and was prominently mentioned as a pennant contender. The day McBride returned to the team tho club lo.n. The Injury to McBride was happening No. 1, the winning of the 11 pames was hippcnlng No. 2. It was No. 3, however, that convinced PresHARRY MEHRE SOON TO RETURN TO N. D. BASKETBALL SQUAD Return Will Materially Strengthen Team Optimistic Over Butler Showing. v That Harn' Mehre will posUlvely b in pood 8hap by the end of next week or perhaps sooner, was the good news that emanated from basketball headquarters at Notre Dame last night. Big "Jumbo" has been misseel by the Irish, and it Is believed that his return will not only aid the team work of the squad Immensely but will also instill an abundance of confidence Into the men. He has been playing varsity basketbull with Notro Dame for three oar, and Notro Dame's greatest disaster on the court this season occurred when Harry fell in a practice game In November, breaking his arm. The campus is optimistic over th uncxi ecteel Fhowlng of the team against Butler. Monday. The belief that N. I. will yet be represented by a mighty nifty quintet Is helel everywhere. At practice yesterelay a large crowd of student watched the maneuvers of the squad, and the fiji.timent expressed was very enti..idaatie. Ha las promised to put the squael through the wort of drilling that wrought their great Improvement last week, and firmly believes that Creighton can be defeated if the men display the fight that characterized the game with Butler. Creighton will be met on Friday and Saturday. This western school, although little is heard of it on this side of the Mississippi, annually produces one of the finest teams in the Missouri valley country. They have proved mighty hard nuts to crack in the past, and until the performance of the Ciold and Blue against Butler tho opinion prevailed that the Irish did not stand a show against them. UnleM a bunch of hard luck assaili Halas again, however, the toughest fort of a battle should ensue when N. D. meets the westerners.
