The startling statement that one-twentieth ot all marriages in the United States end in divorce La of itself sufficient to arouse even' earnest r.aan and woman to the seriousness of the situation that confronts us. Upon the Integrity and purity oi the American home depends the whole superstructure of our national life. Where the home la undermined and destroyed and children cast adrift by a selfish and self-centered individualism, there is an end ot all social and moral restraint. To combat the growing evil of divorce In this country, a group ol public-spirited men and women have been trying to get through congress a uniform divorce law. What is known as the Edmonds Bill alms to accomplish this end. The purpose of this bill is to limit the grounds of divorce. Stiff Fight Looms. One. difficulty in the way of a widespread publicity and agitation In favor of more stringent divorce laws grows out of the fact that the divorce evil has become universal. Many a voice has been silenced which today would be raised In protost against this growing evil but for the fact that some member ol his immediate family or some near relative has Joinod the ranks ofthe divorced. Because South Carolina has no divorce law. the moral standards and DUNSANY TO PROVE WORTH OF POETRY Will Undertake Lecture Tour to Convince People of Poet's Products. LONDON, Dec. 31. Lord Dunsany, author, poet, dramatist and soldier, chief hater of shams and all materialism, is about to undertake a lecture tour to convince people of the real value of poetry. "It seems perfectly obvious to me," he says, "that poetry is ol some use. "Man may prefer many more material things, but really poetry is no more silly than a new automobile. "It has Its place among the needs of humanity, and if a man neglects to recognize it then he w;ll be little better off than one who doe3 not know that he requires a thick coat on a cold day. "That 13 how I regard poetry, as something that every man needs, and this is my argument. It Is what a man does, not what he says, that matters. "The human feelings are the one ipofesslon common to all. They are the common denominator of the human race, and therefore, of all material that people can possibly care to read about and, surely, they should be- the most lntertstlng. IKThod From Emotions. "And the human feelings aro the raw material of poetry. "Poetry Is actually made cut ol whatever emotions may have been most profoundly etlrrel In the hearts of men. women and children in any period on which the poet may have been able to lay h's hands. "Poetry Is made of our "nnermcst feelings, and they are nearer to us than our boots, our clothing, our cash, or anything that our cash can buy. "Man may prefer many material things to poetry, and yet the value of all these material things, apart from the obvious necessltle-s of life, Is the pleasure to be derived from them. "Poetry Is concerned mainly with the delight that people get from all manner of objects, so that it is more valuable to a man than the mcst material thlr.trp. because it is directly concerned with hU pleasure. Money, at the best, will only bring It to him indirectly. " 'What's the darned use ot poetry? is the question people ask me. Well, I have been trying to give the answer." V U .it THE RT. REV. W. A. GUERRY. habits of our people hive been frequently assailed. I do not believe that moral conditions in this state are worse than elsewhere. This Ls a matter of opinion based upon a general knowledge of conditions throughou the state. The charg-i has been made that owing to our rigid anti-divorce laws there is a greater amount of concubinage in this state than In an other southern state. In the absence of any evidence In support of this statement. I have always felt that the prejudice in the case was father to the thoughL Separation Allowed. Our state makes proper provision for a legal separation of a man from his wife or of a wife from her husband, If for any reason it is no longer desirable or possible for them to live together. In the cas'j of a brutal, cruel, and dissolute husband, the state will give the wife a legal separation from her husbanc and will also compel him to supiiort his wife and children. This Is a. it should be. The trouble Is that most people who are seeking divorce are not satised with a legal separation. The underlying purpose of It all is too often the intention of marrying again as soon as the divorce has been granted.
