cf erlouB Intent ahot through with humor. Action laps for ncnr a moment Its technique Is fla,wle-. Its pettingrs and phologrmphy approaching perfection. Adranoo In Cinema. I ras of a mind hen f.rrt conföderinu the list to place "The Cabinet of Dr. CAlUrarl" In first pealtlon. That film marfc the Wg-saat aoH-ance In the art of the cinema since the first photoplay was made. Its form Ls neither literature, portraiture nor drama. It represents a form that employs each of those elements, ret Is distinct unto Itself, a form that for want of a better name I designate as cinema composition. However, the Caligarl film ha-d to resort to cublstlc Betting's and an irrational rtory to achieve ita effectIn 10 years the cinema composer will be an established flrure in the world of art. He, or she, will be neither author, 'playwright or painter. To give reasons for each of the eelectlor.a would require too much space. One thing alone In "The Kid" would make It worthy cf a

plac In any Hat. That was the expression In Chaplin's face when he was Informed that the kid was 111. That was the greatest bit of facial acting" ever caught by the camera. I placed The Journey's End" in the lit because it told its etory adequately without the aid of even one subtitle. In doing that It fulfilled the true mission of a photodrama. Ten other photoplays considered at length for a placo on the list were "The Golem." "Little Lord Fauntleroy." "Tho Old Nest." The Lotus Eater." "Deception." "Without Benefit of Clersry." "Over tho Hill." "Black Beauty." "Oet-Kich-Qulck Wallingford" and "Sentimental Tommy." It waa my pleasure to meet Mary Plckford several time! during the year. I was no rruore doubtXul about placing "Little Iord Fiauntleroy" among1 the first 10 than I was about some which did find a place there. However, I felt that I miglit bo biased In .MJw Pickford'a favor beeaune of th personal impreesion she made upon me. For that reason 1 omitted her film from the first 10. Padding injured tho sincerity of "The Old Nest." The same la true of others in the secondary list. "Way Down East" was not considered because of anachronisms In characters and eettinga. The list as It stands Is not entirely representative. It does not Include short comedies and features. They will be considered in a supplementary list. The plays aa listed might be classified as "feature" films.

DISCUSSES HUMOR

Says Real Secret of Living to an Old Age is to Become a Joke. NEW YORK, Dec. 31. "If you want to live forever become a Joke." This formula for longevity is put forward by a man thoroughly qualified to discuss both humor and long Ufa Chauncey M. He retains his rosy-cheeked bllthness despite the pressure of work in connection with his Job as chairman

"There aro no new Jokes," Depew .'-aid. "They come and so, and then they como back apain sometimes In a different form, but very often not changed at all. Men come to mo and in a hushed voice ask, 'Have you heard the latest?' and then they tell mo one that I heard during the Grant administration.
