BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Oct. 13.: Major John G. Emery, Grand Rapids, national commander of the American Legion, told the txchane t ciub and its guests the Rotary. Ki-1 wanif, and Merchants Dinner clubs j and Grand Army men here, that the; American Legion intends to do its j part to see that while many a soldier, lay wounded on the battlefields of ; France without succor, none shall lie wounded or disabled or ill in an j American home withou succor. Michigan's part in his 1921-22 1 program will be to securo an adjust-! ment of all unpaid claims, if po3-'
sible, within the year. Emery' told those present what the Legion stands for. "It doesn't want to wo a red flag wave in America," he said, "nor even a pink one." The Legion. Emery explained, has a constitution pledging its members to "God and Country" and has taken a stand toward "keeping God in American history." It believes there is no place In America for the foreigner who refuses to be naturalized and it believes that a certain men (Eugeno V. Debs, by inference) now

Neighbors Testify Against Widow in Hanging Case
THREE RIVERS. Mich.. Oct. 13. The hearing of Mrs. Lavinr.a Plummer Slack, charged with the murder of her husband, William J. Slack. 20 years her senior, began today in Justice William E. Barnard's court. Neighbors testified that family quarrels were frequent and intimates declared Slack had never been heard to discuss suicide. Mrs. Nellie Rupgles testified she had twice seen Mrs. f.ack strike her husband.

Burn? of Ionia reformatory to circuit judges throughout the state not to sentence prisoner? to Ionia for a time berau.-e r.f the recent fire here, with withdrawn h.te today by the warde n, who announced places had been provided for r.cw pri.-onrrs. The warden, however, appealed to friends of prisoners here not to visit the reformatory, because of tho congested conditions. The warden assured relatives, however, that inmates here are comfortable and are being well cared for.
