' -Lilian. Lillian, dtarl" I bent above the bed where my friends had thrown hcrseli for the ten minutes' relaxation I had prescribed for her. With an anxiety which I dared not betray on account of Marlon, who also bent over her mother, her childish face sharpenel with worry, I t-canned my friend's face, which was still flushed, and listened to her uneven breathing. "Ye. What Is it?" Her eyef flew wide open, but for an instant there was no recognition in them, only a vague bewilderment. She raised herself on one elbow, looking around the room wonderingly until her eyes fell on Marlon. Then I started at th sound she laughed lightly, sprang to her feet,- and stretched her arms high above her head. '"Those old Seven Sleepers had nothing on me, I fancy," she said. "How long did I sleep?" , "Only the ten minutes I gave you," I returned. "I didn't dare let you stay any longer with the Image of Mrs. Durkee In the background. But are you sure you're all right?" Marion echoed my words, her arms clasping her mother's waist. "You're not sick are you, Mumsie?" "Sick!" Her mother echoed her words Indignantly. "Whatever put that in your head, sweetheart?" She flaflhed an Inquiring, almost suspicious .glance at mo as she spoke, and I had hard work to keep what Dicky calls a "poker face." But Alarion is a loyal little soul, and she diverted her mother's attention from me promptly and cleverly. "Why ,you went out of the room so quick, and your face was all red, and you went to sleep so quick, and I was afraid we couldn't wake you, and I am so sorry I was naughty about my hair, and I never will bo again." "Mother was naughty too." Lillian "bent over her child with passionate tenderness. "And don't worry one bit more, I'm perfectly all right. Now I must hurry or Auntie Durkee will be over with a rolling pin." Marion laughed merrily, and I saw Lillian's face relax with satisfaction. There is nothing which causes her

BIILIE: For centuries men and women have been trying to answer your first question. No two persons over havo given the same definition of love, and It would be useless for mo to attempt one. It is absolutely impossible for a girl really to love two men at the sime time. Don't marr any man if your heart is filled with affection for another.

Tomorrow's HOROSCOPE By Genevieve Kemble nti day. skit. 2:;. This day's elder3al operations mako for sudden and abrupt visitations of a surprising nature occurrences that seern to drop, as it were, "from a clear Eky," although the astral sky is somewhat beclouded by 'a malefic operation of tho occult and eccentric planets, whose influence manifests in ways impossible to forecast. Under the circumstances it would be wifle to remain as quiet and poised as possible, and to attend to matters? in hand with conservatism and firm control. Change and journeys should be avoided, and strife and litigation ?hunned. All matters pertaining to letters, contracts and publishing may well be cautiously handled. Tho whose birthday it Is should endeavor to pass a quiet, well-governed and conservative year, avoiding change and travel, also quarrels and litigation. A child born on thi3 day may bo prono to be restlos, unsettled, peculiar, and to be sarcastic in its speech. It may succeed best in the employment of others. (Copyright. 1921.)
) Mtijh un-.ai:ir. .rs as a f hadow on :he face of her idolized little daughter. he looked anything but "all right" as she had assured us, however. Her face held tho deep lines which betray excessive' worry of fatigue, and though the flush was rapidly receding, it was succeeded by a. gray ort of look which I liked still less. She caught me watching her and made a little moue at me. "Oh, Paragon of all Housekeepers!" she mocked, "Do you happen to have such a thing as a piece of Ice in this house?" "I orderei-some put in the refrigerator this morning," I replied quietly. "Then it's there," she returned Jubilantly. "I believe rf I asked you for fome wild roses in December you'd produce them. I know the water in the tap is alrfiost boiling, and if you'll permit me to commit petty larceny on your ice box I'll show you how to turn a worn-out Invalid Into a Itcalthy-looklng specimen." "I'll bring tho ico up to you myself." I said, starting for the door. "In that gown? You will not!" sho retorted, starting after me. Rut I had reached tho door and whisked the key from the lock as sho spoke. I pulled the door shut and locked It from tho outside, even as she tugged at It from within, laughing triumphantly at her, I hurried downstairs, and soon returned with some pieces of ico in a dish. "If you've hurt that dress TH thrash you if it's the last thing I ever do," she threatened as I entered the room again. "I defy you to find a single spot," I returned. "Lucky for you," she retorted grimly. "Now for a lightning toilet." I had witnessed her marvelous powers of recuperation before, also her ppced in dressing, so despite my worry I was not suprised when she rame back into my room 15 minutes later to seo a most wonderful transformation. I knew that live minutes of her time had been spent in applying hot, wet cloths to her face, following the treatment by dashes of cold water, and finishing by rubbing every portion of her face lightly with ice. The result was a glowing countenance, which, toned down only by a littlo cold cheam and rice powder, looked 20 years younger and Infinite degrees healthier than tho face which she had worn out of tho room. Her abundant silver hair, always wavy, was knotted carelcsslly low on her head, her most becoming coiffurj, and she was dressed with her usual modish exquisiteness, except for the last fastenings, so hard for any woman to achieve alone. There, lady!" she said triumphanty. "Aren't I nifty? Now if you'll just help me with these plaguey fastenings." "You'ro tho eighth wonder of the world," I assured her, as I bent to the troublesome snaps, but my own heart was fa.r from assurance. There were limits, I told my-elf, even to Lillian's wonderful constitution, and her still more wonderful will, which, so far, had enabled her to triumph over really serious 1116, both mental and physical.
