By ROYAL, S. COPELAND, I. D. Commissioner of Health, New York City
At lea?t one out of every dozen persons who read this haa had a broken bono at some time or other. Some have had a half-dozen broken bone. I know a man who ha had at le.st one break a year inco early child hood. Ml. CornnVNi Th bonea of porno persons lack certain dement or have too much of others. Anyhow, the bonea are abnormally brittle. They snap under the slightest unusual strain. A fall on a sidewalk may result in fracture. As we grow older, the tl?3uea become more brittle. Children have elastic tissue and flexible bones. "When we leam Just how to eat and hcr.v to select exactly the right foodHuffs, then our bones and all our othr structures will be Ktrong and resistant to injury and disease. There are several kinds of fractures. One is complete fracture, In which there i. a complete break, the bone being divided into two parts. Another is Incomplete fracture. This Is sometimfa culled "greenftlck" fracture, because it is like the Imperfect .break which follows your attempt to break a limb off a living tree. Some of the fibres break In two, but most of them merely bend. Th1 is the kind of fracture we are i;ely to find In young person. A compound fractrro is one In which tho bone breaks and the ends stick through the flesh and kin, forming an open wound. An Impacted fracture is one In which tho ends or the breaK are driven into each other. How would you know the bone Is "broken? BEGIN HUNT FOR m.Y4 fin icirvif:" IS ANGCLi:S. Cullf. July 28. John J. "That's very' nice." But I could! jve she did not approve, and that her tongue would wag about tho Incident for a Ions time. "Who was that dreadful per?cn?" Edith asked me when I came back into the room. I explained as well as I could, but I did not think it necessary to add that Mrs. Maynard was one of the most virulent gossips in the neighborhood. Edith, however, guessed as much. "I suppose ehe'll tell this to all her friends and they'll tell their friends and the'll tell everybody else and then people will start in all over afriin telling each other," she ighed. "It's terrible to be thought so wicked, especially when you aren't." Ought to Do Arm I Brok( -rm is First, there might be Ioas of mo tion. Following the break in the bone, the muscles sometimes con tract, making it impossible to move the part freely, If at all. Then there may be deformity, the normal line of the limb being broken. Fain and "crepitus" are other, symptoms. crepitus is tho peculiar eound or feeling which results when the ends of the broken bone are rubbed together. Now, let us suppose that tho accident has happened a long way from & doctor. Tout examination reveals tha tthe bone la broken. How are 3'ou goJng to get tho palient home with as little damage as possILle? If the broken bor.e 3 not .xed and supported in some effective way the ragged ends of the broken bom will rub and tear the muscles and oft tissues. Rough handling fay result in producing a compound fracture, the ends of the bone may actually be forced through the skin. It then becomes an open wound with all the dangers of ic.fection and blood poisoning. If It is an arm that i3 troken, the arm fay be supported in a sliniT made of a handkerchief, a towel or any strip of doth. Then, If Jt is bound to tho body by a larger cloth the ar mwill be mort secure and less tkely to be jarred or harmed. If tho leg is broken, more support Is needed, because the patient ci;i do little to help himself. A splint of ome ort must be found. This may be a Fhingle or piece of board, a rolled up newspaper, a bundle of twigs or straw, a strip of bark or any other similar device. This is placed along the leg and iirmly bound by side strips of cloth, both above and below the break. This will support the part while the victim is carried home cn a board, a mattress or any kond of stretcher. Tho doctor will do tho CONGRESS TO SIT UNTIL EARLY FALL WAS1IIXGTON. July 26.
