State department officials may be besieged with envoys of protecting foreign powers, incensed because the U. S. may seize and search their ships for contraband liquor. Fully conscious of the dangers Involved, treasury officials today went aheid preparing regulations which may fall like a bombshell upon foreign ears. Foreign ships having liquors aboard and entering American territorial waters, run the risk detsniations, ev'en for coaling purment agents. Atty. Gen. Ivy Spates, colored, was given the limit by a superior No. 2 jury which returned a sealed verdict against him Friday mornirg for robbery. He will serve 5 to 14 years at Michigan City. Spates was Indicted for robbing the grocery store and meat market of Alex Gyorjry, 2021 W. Linden aw. Nov. 27. 192 0. Evidence showed that he "shot up" the place, and took 133 from the cash register.

Rule "Nighties" Must Show Knees In Light Breeze NEW YORK, July 8. The bedroom farce, the popularity of which has been waning, is expected to enjoy a new vogue soon. Advices were received from Paris today that night gowns for the lust time in history, are to be short. Women have tried pajamas. Billie Burkes and various other nocturnal innovations, but never before have they dared to dream of a nightgown which did not reach to the ankles. The new styles, however, extend only slightly below the knees. The general effect is said to be almost as daring as the present street attire.

FIRE DAMAGES HOSPITAL WARD

UKIAII, Calif., July S. More than 900 patients at the Mendocino hospital at Talmage, south of here, early today were routed from their beds when fire was discovered in a ward building housing 240 patients. The patients in the burning building were quickly removed from the structure and as . a precautionary measure patients in nearby buildings were also removed. Patients joined the hospital fire department in lighting the blaze and it was confined to the roof of one ward building. The damage will amount to several thousand dollars. Hospital authorities praised the conduct of both attaches and patients during the fire.
