All of a sudden he gave, the Alligator a push backward toward a chair ami cried: "Stay there until I can get a Policeman Dog and have you arrested!" Down sat the 'Gator, and though he tried to pet up out of the chair he couldn't. And as the chair was screwed fast to the floor, being one Nnrse Jane u5ad for boating eggs, the bad chap couldn't move. "Come on. Johnnie!" cried Fncle Wiggily, catching up a basket and hurrying out. "We'll go to that Fourth ef July picnic, and leave the 'Gator to the Policeman Dog." "What makers the Alligator stay s'uck fast like that. Fncle Wiggily?" asked Johnnie, as be skipped along with the bunny gentleman. "It's because of molasses- candy," answered Mr. Longears. "I hat some .oft. s'tieky pieces of molasses candy b-ft ov r. I put the-m on that chair while I looked for some waxed paper in v.h:h to wrap them. Then the 'Gator came in to get me, but I thought of that way of holding him fast! Wasn't it a crond way?" "Fine!" chattered Johnnie. Then he and Fncle Wiggily went to thpicnic and the 'Gator went to jail, and the- animal boys, girls a nil everybody said the bunny's molasso: candy was just fine and it was the nicest Fourth of July that ever happened. Revelations
For a ter.sr- minute after Dicky announced his tremendous news thre waj absolute silence. I think Mother Graham was too nunr.ed to speak, and while the announcement only confirmed to me the vague fears I haJ experienced inre Dicky told me of the "surprise" he was going to givo me, yet the realization that my home wa. gone crashed against my spirits as a physical blow might have done np-alnst my boiy. lother Graham waa the first to speak. IndeeH. I was in the mental state where I could not speak If I would, and certainly would not if I could. Fierce primitive rage against my husband was having its way with mo. That he should dare sell our home without consulting me! "Sold the Marvin house ; Mother Graham ejaculated. "Sold my home! What do you mean? Have you gone insane?" "Never was more clear-headed in my life," Dicky e-aid defiantly, but I saw he was looking furtively from hi.s mother to me, and that he was palpably disturbed by our reception ef his new?. "You don't feem to grasp what I got for It. Didn't you hear? Twenty thousaand bucks, iron men, simoleons " "Quit that foolery!" his mother eaid sharply. "It doesn't matter If you got a million dillara for it, you had no riht to sell it without consulting me or Margaret," she added, lamely, as an after thought. Dicky threw up his head arrogant'v "I bought it, didn't I, with my own hard-earned money? I guess I have a right to sell it if I get a chance like this without running home to ask any woman's consent." A(toc-s the fog of my wrath struck the gh am of an illuminating, whimsical thought, one which I caught, imprisoned, turned into a. weapon. "The bargain is all completed, I suppose?" I asked raeeklj. "All but the signing of the papers," Dicky answered. "The man who bought it hus left it in the hands of an attorney down here, as he had to go back north today, and he wlil send the money right back, so a soon as I sign the papers I'll get the mazuma." . . My mother-in-law's eye caught mine, with grim comprehension. She knew as well as I did, Dicky's absolute ignorance of ordinary business matters, a fault common to the artistic temperament, and she, also, realized what a pit he was unconsciously digging for himself. "Don't weaken, Margaret," she cautioned. "No matter how much he pleads. lie's brought it on himself." Dicky looked fron: one to the other of us, his face th3 picture of puzzleel amazement. "What tho devil!" he exploded. "What's all this tommyrot? Wnat's Margaret got to do with selling the house?" "Better ask her," his mother suggested slyly. "I will." He turned to me vehemently. "What's all this tomfoolery, anyway?" "Simply that you cannot sell tly house no one will buy it unices my signature is attached to the deed, and that I do not intend to give, at bast I shall consider the matter ery carefullv before consenting. " Z made my voice as matter-of-fact as it 1 were declining a proffered piece of bread and butter at the dinner table, and bent indifferently ove my sewing as I finished, but not before I had caught grim but mirthful approval in my mother-in-law's eyes. Dicky was silent fer a minute, then sprang to his feet so vehemently that he almost overturned his chair. "Richard, I beg you to remember that I am still an invalid," his mother remarked frigidly, and I saw with a savage glee that only a woman can understand, that she had indeed joined forces with me to make the recreant Dicky as uncomfortable us possible. 'I beg your pardon, mother," he said perfunctorily, then hurried into excited speech. "Of all the bunk I ever heard in my life, that's the limit!" he said scornfully. "I suppose you think you're the original little Cutie, f-pringing a bluff like that. Well, right here's where you fall down! You don't get away with anything like that where I'm concerned, and don't you forget it. I'm going right ahead and sell the house and get the money without your ladyship having Dr. I'. I'.
