dent to business transacted by Judge Gilmer since date. Is a question that arises as the restult of Gov. Warren T. McC ray's acceptance of Gilmer'9 resignation, received .Monday morning. Judpo Gilmer resigned, a?kin? to bo relieved June 1, hoping that an acceptance and appointment of a MiccoNor rnisht bo madeby that date, but rcceivinc: no word he continued to perform the duties of the office, e.vpectinpr frcm day t oday to hear from the state executive. Acceptance of the resignation came Monday as follows: "Indianapolis. "June 4, 1921. "Hon. Frank Gilmer, "South Rend. Ind. "My dear Judge. Gilmer: "I be? to acknowledge receipt of your favor of May 26th in which you tender your resignation as judge of the city court of South Bend, same to take effect Jun 1. 1921. "I will, of course, under the circumstances, accept your resignation and wish to advise that the vacancy will be filled as promptly as possible. "Kxtendins my tct wishes, I am. "Your very truly. "Warren T. McCray. "Governor of Indiana." Gilmer Interprets Letter. "I tako It that my resignation Is accepted on June 4th as of June lft," said Judge Gilmer Monday on receipt of the acceptance, "and it fpcms to me that South Bend had been without a city court since that date, thouph the courts might holi the acceptance effective only from the date of execution or receipt. I have not looked that matter up. but one thinsr certain, that I am judge no Innerer." Gilmer closed his business in connection with the court this morning with no successor in siht. It has been common knowledge that there ha.i been a considerable scramble anion? youn republican lawyers, for appointment to the place, sii.ee It became known that Chester 1 Du Comb, republican nominee for the oflice. dies not care to be placed on trial pending the election, as to his fitne. Al. Hozins-kl. Arthur Moon and several others, are contesting for the appointment. Judce Gilmer stated today that he would not make any claim for salary after June l, on the theory that h!s resignation, was accepted as of that dat".

Claims Farmers Benefit By Emergency Tariff

Br T'nited Pre-s: CHICAGO. June C Congress took the panicky streak out or the American farmer and he now has Iii? sleeves rolled up and his feet squarely on the ground. The farmer who some months aero threw hi rake in the marsh and shouted, "what's the use," ha been given a real incentive for goinar back to work. Tillers of the soil, many of them on the vertro of bankruptcy for a long". Ion? while and unable to borrow running capital, believe they have started on a new era of prosperity. A survey of the agricultural districts of the country completed by the American farm bureau federation today showed a vast chance of conditions among farmers during the first week of the new emergency tariff law. Back to Fatm. A real back-to-the-farm movement by the boys who left during the days of fat pay envelopes in the factories, added to the ncace of mind of tho agriculturalist, the survey also showed. Farmers, according to report., are

Secy Wallace Says Bread Prices Will Be Decreased

I I ,rw F"- 9mvm .'rr , mi

H.v United Tresor WASIIINGTCX. June ?. 'Return of the five cent loaf of bread ;s a near possibility throughout the United States, Scc'y of Agriculture Wallace said today. Production costs are approaching the pre-war rates. The question of the cheaper loaf won will bo ndreetly up to bakers and grocers. Wallace warned. "The average value of the wheat needed to make a one pound Toaf of bread now is one and seven tenths cents" said Wallace. "The average retail price of a pound loaf throughout the country is 10 and threetenths cents. I'arraer3 are receiving for their wheat only slightly more than in pre-war day?, when bread customarily sold for five cents a loaf. Flour prices are largely deflated. "The :ig difficulties in the way of the five cent loaf now are high freight rate anl high wages. When theso factr-rc ave reduced and the

labor coot of transportation, mill- ; ins and takinr deflated thre will, be no justltcation for failure of the j five cent laf to reappear." j Bread rrices at retail have been j reduced 10 percent through the. country in the last six months, according to the r-rhe data of the labor department. J In the same period the erst f a ! barrel of flour at the mill his been reduced from 5.:0 to $S a. barrel or ; about 13 percent. j Retail and wholesale 'takers thus j are getting practically ail their bread materials at prices far be-low thoe of six months ago. Since movements are already un- I derway for reducing transportation rates and because of the general trend to de-crease wares to pre-war-'

basis, bread prices should . b eon- j riderably decreased within the noxt I few works, th" secretary siid. Fol- j lo win g the reduction in wag" 9 riven railroad mrn by the Unite 1 States -laber board, plans were .mmpdia to-j ly formulated for lowering the freight and other transportation rates. Whn the. new- rates are made effective, as ha teen prom- , isrd Pres't Harding, thrr. there is; no reason why bakers ard retailers; should not again sell their product ! at prices prevailing in 1317, Wallace 1 siid. j
