Dicky's eys followed mine to where the piece of paper with the decoded telegram written upon it flutted in the breeze at my feet. He grinned lazily, reached for it, and waved it in front of me. "The fates are against you, old dear!" he s-aid. "You think you can postpone the e1l hour of reckoning, and here 'the poipers' turn up
and confront you like one of thosi i
old basilisk thing-um-a-bobs. Better turn your face away from contemplating the beauty of the lake and look upon this evidence of your iniquity." I took it jn my own hands, and made a pretence of examining it carefully in order to regain the poise that had been woefully shattered by this sudden revelation of Dicky's knowledge ef my responsibility for Kita Brown's departure. "Whore did you get this?" I de-

"On the hoor where the beautiful
! gyurl detecativo most carelessly
dropped it." Dicky retorted mockinely. "Very careless work, oil dear" he shook his head mournfully "think we'll have to reduce you and put you back to patrolling a beat for awhile." "Oh. don't be so ridiculous!" I said, pettishly, conscious that I was very near either tears or temper, so completely exasperated was I at my own carek5sness. How in the worl l could I have lost this paper? why in the world hadn't I destroyed it? my mind was ringing the changes on these eiuostiona even as I read over again the words in which I had decoded the telegram Lilian had pent me concerning Blta Brown. "Would you rather I were serious?" Tiier c was a note in Dicky's voice which I had heard but two or three times in my married life a note which 1 can only describe as that of conscious authority. 1 do not mean that he has never tried to be "bossy" and "cave mannish." but his exhibitions of authority in those moocis have appeared to me to be both boyish and puerile, to tell th
truth. But at the intonation I had jut heard. I braced myself mentally and physically to hear something worth while from my husband's lips, no matter whether it were pleasant or unpleasant to me. "Much rather." I said, quietly. "In the firs: place, then, why don't you come to me with this?" "To you?" I answered faintly, before I could repress the words, and realized even as I uttered them that the unconsr-iou.- emphasis I had put upon the pronoun could not help but hold a sting for my husband. There was a touch of bitterness in the suddenly angry eyeJi he
Thürs- turned on me.
"Yes. to me. I had all that dope veirs ago."
I was able to keep my voice from words, but Dicky must have seen j the amazement in my eves, for his
own grow harder as ne went on. "Af it happen., Harry dug all that stuff up for Dil when she took a notion she happened to want it." I drew a deep breath, and asked: "D.i Eillian know that you knew?" "Of course sh did. I was there whn Harry brought in th" goods. I'll tell the world there was a great
investigator for you. Old Harry knew more 'ways that are dark and tricks that are vain' that Bret Harte's heathen Chinee ever thought of. Wonder where Harry 13, anyway?" I saw that for a "minute he had forgotten me in his reminiscence of the man who had played so bizarre a part in his, life, but I had neither leisure nor inclination to bestow upon Harry Underwood. I detested him too cordially, and, beeide, all my mind was centered upon .ie eiuestion. Why hadn't Lillian simpy wired me: "Ask Dicky." when I had tele
graphed her for information which' would give me some hold on Kita Brown? ' There was but one answer to it that I could see. I gave it to myself unwillingly. Lilian must have feared either Dicky'e reluctance to ! give up the information he held, or i the garruity which had caused herj to withhold important informatior. from him in our old service days. : and request me to do the sanv: thing, repugnant iia such a retdric- ' tion was both to her and to me. j I was startled to see Dicky sud- : denly spring to his feet, striking his , clenched fist into his palm. j "The trouble "with you and Lil is; that you both are so cursedly yelf- : sufficient!" he broke out. "You
don't need anybody in your young live as long as you can run the universe together."
A wave of amazement tinged with laughter swept over me. The j irony of it! Once I had been wildly! jealous of Lillian's influence over j Dicky. Now it was Dicky's turn to ' resent the dependence which Lillian ; and I had upon each other. '
