LIFE BOAT LAUNCHED BY CATERPILLAR TRACTOR The Broadside view also shows the caterpillar attachment for the lifeboat carriage. The lifeboat is first drawn down to the shore by the tractor after which it reverses and pushes the lifeboat into deep water.
THE ELEPHANT GETS HIS SEMI-YEARLY MANICURE It is not an easy or a delicate job, this peeling of the elephant toenails, but it must be done. The keeper takes his file and other paraphernalia and starts his day's work while the animal's attention is distracted by the hay.
FIRST AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE LAUNCHING OF A NAVAL WAR CRAFT "The Milwaukee," which was launched at the Navy Yard in Seattle, Wash. This will be the speediest fighting craft in the Navy and gives some idea of the new style and type of war vessel which has been developed. "The Milwaukee" is the first war craft sponsored from the air and on land at the same time. She was christened by two bottles, one of champagne and the other of water.
MRS. HARDING RECEIVES GIFTS FROM THE BLIND Miss Winifred Holt, "The Lady of the Lighthouse"; Jennie Williams and Vercnica E. Mazicka, two blind orphan girls were received by President and Mrs. Harding. The girls brought gifts they had designed and made a "Polly Prim" apron, a book cover and a purse of "Harding blue" and silver.
CENTRAL NEWS PHOTO SERVICE, NEW YORK BEAUTIFUL SOCIETY WOMAN GOES INTO MOVIES Mrs. Lydig Hoyt, society woman, who has been voted in a contest the most beautiful woman in America, and who has been pronounced the handsomest woman in America by noted artists, has joined the Norma Talmadge Company, and will play "second" to that star in a new film play called "The Wonderful Thing."
LUXURIOUS INTERIOR OF THE R-36 This immense airship is now practically completed at the Inchinnan works, at Glasgow, Scotland. It is said to be an improvement in sire and speed over her predecessor R-34. A gondola over 130 feet long, built under the hull, is joined to the general structure as if.it were part of the ship. Remarkable ingenuity has been used in fitting up the interior with every possible comfort taking up very little space at the same time. The dimensions of the R-35 are as follows: It is 672 feet long 78 feet in diameter, 91 feet in extreme height, 2,101,000 cubic feet of gas capacity, with a capable gross lift of 63.8 tons. She is propelled by five engines and aggregates 1,570 H. P., giving a maximum speed of 65 miles an hour. A crew of four officers and 24 men are necessary.
