AFTER THE HONEYMOON. too." are the good old days when John and Mary o ni bravely to tho altar and plighted their troth 'n th" f,.ee of tie- fact that their fole capital conf.std d' a few silver dollars, two .strong Louies, four willing hands and two hearts that beat as one, in the littl" rottage Vy the si.le t the road with a rude table, two f hairs, a stove, a le d and a few ttone chii.a dishes. That was- all; all except the abounding joy of their yoang hearts, which made the cottage a palaca and John and Mary king and queen of their sacred domain. Tiny expected to phare each other's bur-d'-ns. and they lid. Thev expected hardships, and tiny had them. Tluy expected joy, and they found it. They expected success, and it came, maybe. And v.ith success came a looking back to the old days of mutual toil .and sacrifice as the happiest days of tluir lives. Nrw all this is changed. John must have a car ami Mary must wear a solitaire. The cottage by tin; .-ude of th- r-i.ol mu-t be a modern bungalow with niL's .and china and eriod flfniture to match 1 .tie is. Then, too. the strain of keeping up with the proo .-sion ofien robs life of its simple joys. Mary's demands irritate John. John's inability to meet them irritaP s Mary. 'lashes become more and more fre-pi.-nt until by and by their love-dream becomes a painful tragedy. In this eompb x age. it would be dülb-uit to go back to th" old ways of simplicity and honest content. I'.ut an emulation uf the spirit of simplicity that characttrie-d the old days would work wonders toward restoring life to a more normal plane.
o ARE YOU A STAR? We can't till be stars, but we can all do our bit ot shining. Sotr.o folks are not happy because they can't bo the Mary Piekford. the John 1). Hoc left. Hers, the Thomas A. Ihlison.s or the Warren Hjrdincs of the eternal movie called Life, lint - Mary Ihekford and the other stars would ncx'cr .-bine without support. And the glory of the heavens at night is not in the single brilliantly-glowing phmet. but in the m riad-sea tt r d specks of stardust that surround it, each doing it little bit to shine its last. If we cannot il'inninc the world, we can brighten the corner where ve are in our homes, at work or in social fellowship. Though the f-'peck of stardust never becomes any brighter, shine as It will, the radiance of the determined man or woman who make the best of what they are and have, exlands with practice, often into stardom. "How far that little candle throws hij beams! So shim s a good deed in a naughty world."
BASEBALL BATS. A boy goes to a store to buy that precious posr'sjion. a baseball bat. I!: finds that the ash stick he paid $1.'15 for last year now sills for $.1. If tho lo "s father is in the lumber business he'll tell his son that the price of ash wood for making bats litis b. en rut in two. Hardware and sporting goods dealers say that they can't get enough hat that the manufacturers are only partly tilling .order and paying. "You can't have any more this year." Pome of you manufacturers xvho have idle xvood-workint? machinery might with rrofit investigate the possibilities of bat making.

More Truth Than Poetry By JAMES J. MONTAGUE
no usn. rerhap. aa young John D. has just suggested, A hash was made of Mr. Samson's life. And he of hair and strength was quite divested I?ecaue he picked a looker for a wife. Delilah, nays' young John, has too much beauty To cook and svetp and work around the house: She hated every port of wifely duty And to she played the traitor t o her spouse. It may he? true- that happiness conjugal In life 9 tar more easy to attain When wives have no desire but to be frugal. And most of such, unluckily, are plain. It may be true that husbands looso their buttons. Orow iM before their time, and bowed with care When wives forget to sweep, neglect their muttons And ppntl their time in doing up their hair. U may be true that there i small enjoyment. And xery little comfort or repose When wedded to a wife whose chief employment Consist in dabbing powder on her nose. Though beauty In a ball room ia alluring t And charming In a garden 3 icaTy hade, It often is a trifle past enduring. To have to sit around and see It made. And yet at that, we tell young John D. plainly That he may talk, and write and scheme and plan. And even lecture Sunday pupils vainly. He'll, never dim the lure of looks for map.. Tor youth, will ccme and sit. and look and listen And doubtless they will fervently atfree And then with beatmg h carta and eyes that glitten They'll pick the r.lfticst looker that they see. WATT. I got a cowlick, an' it 6tands tTP straight, an I got dirty hands. An If it shows a single epeclc I have to so an' wash my neck. An' every day Ma squints an' peers To fee if I have washed my cars; Hut I ain't ever really neat All on account of bavin feet. There fect of mine arc always wrong. I mustn't shuffle 'em along Or kick a stone that's In tho way, Or If I do someone will say: "I wish you'd lift your feet a bit The way you walk gives me a fit! Those shoes were new a week ago An now you've busted out the toe." They're always peckin at mo, too, For Ftandin' like the fellers do. An' just because- my toes, turn In, The teacher makes the pupils grin Hy trdlin' mo ten times a day: "ritase turn your toes the other way!" An' even when I'm In my Feat She kicks if I Jut swing my feet. If I get nervous an' I put One shoe upon the other foct. Or fferape the floor, they nay: "My land! Is that the way a boy should frtard?' An' if I rest 'em on a chair. Ma Kiys: "Don't put your feet up there!" Ati' if I sit on them thry roar: "Please put your feet upon the floor!" I'm gettin' tired of all this lalk About the way I stand or walk, An' anyhow It seems to me. At least as far as I can see. My feet aren't any different than Th other fellers round here, an kome day my temper will explode It ain't my fault I'm pigcontoed. (Copyright, 1921) No Hoik Ior Tlw Diner.
